Any good projects underway? Wood boats, glass, carbon?
I am busy with the 2002 series Rum Runner rigger's oval fleet. The boats are re-designed, again. I love tinkering and making changes.
Here is a pic of the one of the wood Mono's we are working on for a potential kit. Its 21 inches long and suitable for 6 cell stock or 4 cell Mod. Its very low profile and is a hoot to build. The boat in the pic is being built by Reed Eagle.

Thanks, Dan.
Doug - you are the man. A regular boat production machine. Sounds like the birds are on there own this spring!
Can't wait to see your new fleet.

Ian and I are re-powering his N1/N2 Mono.
I have plans to make a wide HydroMite (adding a little tunnel width).
And LOTS and LOTS of ESCs!

Hey Nate
That's a pretty classy act for a retrieval boat. Are there going to be some bikinis on deck?

LOL!
Nah, just what you see, maybe some pinstripes. It is all fiberglass, scale version of the Sea Ray 310, and it was free! Powered by two Speed 400's and 30mm graupner props. I was really getting tired of the fishing pole/ tennis ball routine.

I just finished a Ned Schmidt Turtle and started on a Blizzard, I have never built a rigger so thought I'd give it a try. It's a really easy kit to build, laser cut and so far every piece is perfect. And I know the place to go to find out what to put in it ;o)

Finished an Electro-Vee with 700BB, Fuller's and an RC-Hydro ESC.
Finished 2 Cats from Jay Turner Plans
Finished 1 Shovel Nose from Garry Finlay plans
Just finished painting a Pickle Fork from Garry Finlay plans, just have to put all the hardware on.
Water should be soft here in about a week. Then lots of practice and tuning.

New Blizzard soon...
Peter has sent a Blizzard my way, will be starting soon, I hope. If Katie doesn't kill me first, that is. Don you know the reason for that...

Brian -
The reason Katie will kill you could ONLY have to do with the fact you always forget to say " Yes Dear". The all time secret of model boaters. When you get real good at "Yes Dear", you will earn B.D.O. 's (Boys Day Out).
Say - We have to get some 'Rum Runner Riggers' in your club so the Blizzards will have some competition.

In the class of semi-fast, sort of racing boats, I am working on:
1. 1/30th Scale PT boat, based on the Dumas PT109, but entirely rewooded for lightness with balsa and liteply. The hull came out 25 oz, instead of 35 oz, so something seems to be working. I can see my way to making this hull come in at 21 oz, now that I have done it once.
2. 1/72nd (yes, that means 13" long) PT109, with a fiberglass hull, geared coreless motor, and two Lithium manganese dioxide cells. All up weight is 118 grams, which is right on scale and power is 5.5 watts, also on scale. Hull is 1.6 oz. glass, doubled in the motor, battery area, and Tap Marine High Strength Epoxy, Fast Cure. Hull weight is 18 grams. I just pulled a mold off the Revell PT109 kit, and started building.

....
I've got this down to a science. The best way to do it is to stay patient for a bit. Eventually she'll want something new (and expensive) for something that SHE's interested in. Let her get it, don't say a word. Be supportive. About a week later, put your order to Fine, Fullers, or AndrewG in. :)
In most cases, this essentially doubles the cost of your hobby - for every $1 you spend, she probably gets to spend $1.50. But ... it's probably a lot cheaper than alimony. :)
Anyway... I'm still weighing my options for this spring's build.
1. 24" RumRunner Tide hull, on 6 cells and direct drive motor TBD (probably a Reddy Ti or Trinity P-94 unless someone suggests otherwise). Will probably use a combination of Octura and homemade hardware, unless the wife buys new curtains ... then I can afford Fullers. :)
2a. 24" Hydro-midi. This is a scaled up version of Doug's Hydromite. 6-8 cells. May swap the drivetrain out of the Tide until I figure the setup out. Will probably build 2 hulls in case I screw something up.
2b. BBY Scat Cat w/ BBY Hardware on a 700 Neo or BB, 12 cells, and one of AndyK's ESC's. Depending how option #1 comes out, I may or may not drop one of the mega brushless motors in it.
ETA for both hulls (however the combo comes out) is June 1st, with the "big race" (family showdown) the 1st week of August.

Good Idea,
I'd love to have a RRR rigger. Kaitie will probably be moving me to Florida, once the RRR Rigger gets in. Do you have an online tutorial for yes dear rehab? Just wondering..
Bryan
Wow
I now finally know the secret of getting great boats - lots of "yes dears" and the 150% cost factor for goodies for my wife.
I always wondered how you guys could get away with brushless set ups and custom hardware - now I too know the secret!!!! Truly, the biggest impediment to getting great FE stuff is convincing my wife that this hobby is not a crazy pastime that sucks a ton of money.
Doug - I am impressed that you have 9 boats under construction! Can't wait to see some of your work in person.
Cheers RvE

I have in my workshop in various stages of finish...
-a Dumas CC Barrelback
-a retrieval boat I'm building with plans from RCBM
-static models of Brittania, a late 1800's Americas Cup challenger and Elsie, a New England fishing schooner
-Kunz UL-1
-Graup Systems Cat
-a Key West
-Taifun
I also have Hydromite plans but that won't get going until next winter.
In addition, I have Roger Newton plans of a 1994 US Cellular turbine that will be scaled back and built for LSH.
I'm also building a model of the local railroad depot in G scale for a future garden railroad.
I have an EC 12 (East Coast 12 meter, a popular 50" RC sailboat).
And finally, the project for which my entire workshop will be cleared when they are ready....I'm waiting on a set of "Tide" plans from Rum Runner Hobbies.
Oh yeah, I also kick out Bluebird houses on a regular basis for anyone around this part of WI that wants one.
Just trying to keep up with my flatlander neighbor Paul. LOL

Stay tuned. I just bought a digital camera and am awaiting delivery.
I thought it would be great to start a "Show me your workshop" thread to follow up this one.
I'm always interested in storage ideas. Maybe some will come out of it. (How the heck do we keep track of all this little stuff?)

Well....I must admit I thought Bryan was getting better with the Yes Dear's and 150% idea until tonight. I guess the amount that I have spent in the last week wasn't enough.......hmmmmmmmm let me think of what I want next. For the amount of money he told me last night that trip to Hawaii is looking real good. Oh Don, while I am in Hawaii I will be sending Bryan to stay with you so have the guest room ready!!!
Bryan does want all of you to know that he has worked (ya right) 2 on-call shifts to pay for the parts.
Maybe one day I will understand this hobby more but for now i have 2 men in my life driving me crazy over it.
Good luck boating gentlemen!!!!

Katie -
Working a few doubles ONLY mean one thing. Brian is "in". Cool.
My swife says as long as I limit the BDO's (Boys Day Out) to a few races each year she is pleased. That translates to "FE boating keep the gentlemen out of trouble". Its just plain good fun.
You just have to try this, Katie.
ps. The building part is like a treasure hunt. Each step of the way it gets better.

Hello all,I have recently gotten back into FE,and am starting off by building an offshore cat much like the Bitt, but from wood, single 700BB 14-16 cells, then after the kinks(if there are any) are worked out I will throw in one of the Megas.Once complete I will throw up some pics, the best part about building your own is I am 99% sure that I can build as good of a boat if not better for 20% of the cost of the PiP hull, and the satis. of putting it together yourself.

Thx Doug, the one thing I am not sure about on my hull is if I should run the single strake down each sponson and the dual steps.Any ideas or opinions on that Doug,or anyone else?Hull 32" L x 8.5 W,tunnel is shallow like Bitt's, depth of 5/8".
Thx

I now have a RRR rigger to build. Thank you Don. Katie has accepted the inevitable, I'm hooked on riggers. Hopefully within the next two weeks to a month, I should have enough components to complete both of them, I'll have to play it by ear (translates= whether Katie has ordered my casket yet) and see how it goes. I am really excited to see how the two designs fare against each other. Don and Peter have both designed great looking riggers, and hopefully I can have each boat at their best when they both hit the water. James is still woking on his Blizzard and I'll send pics when he's nearer completion.

Hello,
I was just wondering if anyone else out there was as curious as I about the new RRR mono.
The picture that Trey Adams posted a while ago looked pretty fierce, although different from the skeleton (in progress) photo from Don.
So what do you say, Don, how about a short update for all the curious scratch build/designed fans out there.
Thanks

Lucas-
We are very pleased with the RRR Prototypes.
Both sizes raced this weekend at the Florida race and we plan to go into full production for the season as soon as possible. We have lined up a new laser cutter who is experianced with boats so things should go fine, now.
The larger boat may have broke the N-2 Mono NAMBA oval record. if it did not it was very close. This boat is a dream to drive. Very forgiving in a chop, also.
The smaller boat was driven by Donnie. He had first day bad luck. This was a tough class with lost of entries and rookie drivers all over the place. Donnie got upside down twice but it wasn't the fault of the boat.
We will be posting pics of the race and both hulls, soon. You can also see Brian Vegas comments on this hull under the thread about the Florida Hydro Shoot-out. Brian loves the boat and will race this hull hull all season.
Thanks for asking.

Don,
Sounds like you have really come up with a winner. I am anxious to hear more about it as I am sure others are when a new design does so well.
Thanks for all the hard work and effort you put into both the site and the hobby.

I am working on a boat of my own design. A little bit like reinventing the wheel but is sure is fun.
The boat will be a rigger-style one made in plastic and a little wood. About 30 inches and will be powered by around 20-30 cells. HW is Fulller's 32-cell rigger and the motor will be either a XL9 or a Lehner 2240/10.
It is my first boat, so I have a LOT of headaches. The hull is 50% complete.

All of the parts that I needed to finnish my rigger are here. I should be finished with it this week. Katie brought forth an idea, pick one rigger and build it. Run it for a bit and decide what changes or component changes are necessary, then complete the other rigger. I will post completed pics as soon as I have the RRR rigger in race ready stock. My Blizzard is nearly completed, but since James has his nearly completed, Don suggested that I do a comparison between the Blizzard and the RRR rigger. I am looking forward to getting both of them on the line. I must say that both Don's and Peter's designs denote great attention to detail and a concerted effort to produce the highest quality possible even before the final product spins a prop. I am glad to have the wisdom and abilities of both men on this board to glean from. We should all be so honored to have a resource such as RRR to draw from and use. Updates to follow.

Check out the review on the main page. We "almost" got them dialed in. Both the RRR rigger and Climate rigger know which direction on the compass is north. Thank goodness for floatation. LOL After some minor adjustments, we'll try again later.

Geez- what am I doing? a BBY Volcanic Splash (my first "real" boat), and some rework on a Kyosho Jet Arrow (ride pads, cooling system rework).
Prop balancer, I'll be building my own (Yep, I know the Astro Flight one is a biggie out there, but, I'm big on building things my self.)
Prop Balancing of an X632, first time out, going to follow Andy K's method as best I can.
I'm contemplating building a couple fancy electronic gizmos to help me out- maybe an RPM/ammeter/voltmeter logger, maybe a d-base backed charger / discharger system (imagine a system that can match and profile cells that doesn't cost a grand! LOL).
I've toyed with the idea of electronic bouys, something whereby I can take a boat (my Kyosho) and push a floating object out in the water, and tell it to drop an anchor. I've thought about putting transponders on the boat that I could use with the bouys to get a measure on performance (point to point time). AndyK, I'll post a new thread shortly- I want to throw some ideas out there...
Thanks,
Paul

Naa, I'm gluing my rudders on real good now.
I'm roughing out a Thriftway TOO 1/16th in length (25.5") and 1/12th in width (12.75"). This can run in O Sport or LSH.
See, this one is scale. Just what scale??

1)After much having a tons of success running my homemade sheet styrene hydro in P sport and LSH I will be building another one from another DPI donar tunnel hull to campaign next year. This boat (as witnessed by many racers) seams to run as fast as some of the BL powered state of the art designs with brushed plett power.Just have to decide in what theme to make the new one in.
2)Also have a micro shovel that i want to get going on.
3)Also have plans to make a 800BBX powered rigger out of LARRY LARSONS Alaskan Assassin 32 cell straight-liner.Just have to relocate the transom in ward a couple inch's and the do some sponson work so it will run ovals.Yes Larry, Dennis gave it to me.
4)AndrewG has a state of the art boat i'll be campaigning in 03 that should give the R/R boys some competion. That will require a lot a testing at Lake X.
