I'm currently building a 1/16th scale hydro, Miss Thriftway. This is from a laser cut kit with no directions. Can anyone tell me if there is a rule of thumb for locating the motor? I know I should place it 1/4 inch off center to the right, but what about front to back? This is about a 23" hull. I'm thinking that about 7-8" from the transom to the aft end of the motor would work. Any thoughts?
Also, does anyone know where I can get a 1/16th scale model of an engine that would look OK in/on it?
Thanx for your help guys.

I'm planning on using a home-made music wire drive. I made one for the last hydro I built, but the water here is still too hard to try it.

Fred ya got a let Jim drive his boats around first, he can break anything, fountains, buoys,.... 12 inches of ice,, at least with the ice he won't have to drive far and probably won't need all that driving prowness he uses when he attacks the fountain LOL:D

Eddie...The other hydro I built is still under wraps. Keeping it a secret for now... I'll just say it's a one-of-a-kind.

Fred I know your building skills and I am sure it is top notch... if you want we can talk about building a 1/16th allison or rolls at the club meeting, there are no real motors available in 1/16th but Randy at bby may include some, I have Garrys drawings on making one from foam if your worried about weight and that my "scale" astro 05 4 turn powered hydro full a whoopaZZ will be too much for ya LOL ( just kidding bud!!) :D

under wraps huh.... I taunt you a second time!!!

Hello Fred,

What are you planning on running for power? This will make a BIG difference on that boat.

Paul.

I have a Lehner Neodym motor I'm planning on using.
Typ 2718/3
I got it used from Steve V. and it looks like a hot little motor.

Fred, if that is the hull I think it is, the best place for the mounting face of the motor is about 8” FWD of the transom. It should be as low as possible. I even dropped mine below the tunnel level by ¼”. This gives you about 7deg angle on the shaft (if you use a solid shaft). More angle than that will cause some tail bounce with anything more than 6 cell power.

A wire drive would be good in this hull too. If so, you can raise the motor up and still keep the prop angle down to 4 - 5deg, which should be just about right. For either drive put the prop trailing edge about 1¼” behind the transom and .58” below. Offset the shaft ¼” – 3/8” to the right and you can reduce the rudder offset to compensate for prop walk.

Garry, I kinda figured you'd know. I think this is one of your hulls. Am I right?
I am finishing another one of your hulls now; the Atlas Van Lines. It built well, and I put a little twist on the paint scheme. I'll be posting it later this week after our club meeting. I think you'll like it.
I also have the laser-cut kit for the Oh Boy! Oberto. I think that one is next on my list to build. Is that one of your hulls also? I believe it's about 28" or so when finished. I have another Lehner motor ready to go into that one too. It's a Neodym 2725/3 I got used from Steve V. I'm thinking 7-8 cells should make 'er scream.
Thanx for your help.

Fred the lehners might be too small for the oberto, (you won't be able to spin a big enough prop, maybe set it up like a LSH with a 700 , anybody else run these??
cheers eddie

The Thriftway and Atlas are from the plans I drew up a few years ago. The 12th scale Oberto is not mine. I am doing a 12th scale turbine Pay’N Pak now, it should be done this summer.
