I have a Hacker B50-8XL controlled by a Schulze 55WO which I intend to install in a hydro. The object is to enter a UK SAW event. Can anyone please advise me on the safe number of cells to avoid blowing the motor, the controller, or both.

First, the 55Wo needs at least 16 cells to operate. Next, the 8XL on the needed 16 cells will make for a small prop and short runs, maybe a minute or less. You either need to get a 105Wo controller that operates 7-17 cells and run the 8XL on 12-14 cells for sprint, or 7-10 cells for endourance. Or, you can get an 13XL and that should give good runtimes for use with your 55Wo. Hope this helps.

Safe????? Your best bet will be 16 cells and a v937 prop

Or, you can drop in 24 cells and really scoot. BUT, with 24 cells everything has to be just right. There is no margin for error. I tried a tweaked v937 and put it over the top and blew the controller. The stock prop was the most it would take.

One more factor is cells. We ran CP 1700's and RC 2400's. The 2400's were always faster, but I'm sure the load was way up too since the boat weighed more with the larger cells.

My suggesstion is start small and work your way up. That way you can get a good setup without pushing it too hard. I started out with 12 cells, when I got the boat running good on 12 I went to 18 and so on.

Keep us posted and good luck,
See ya,
Dick

I have ran the 8XL on 18 24 28 cells in a SAW set up with the 55WO worked fine , Chris Fine also ran the 55WO at 32 cells.

Just a note from Ray Fuller

Ray, I am glad to hear this as I plan to run my 740 XXL 9 turn Boridium (9XL) on 30 cells for LA SAW 2002 and I have 55Wo as my Enduro - Hydro 3 controller, so I can save quite some money by not buying new controller. :)

Which motor did Chris Fine ran on 32 cells? Were there any problems?

Thanks for reply,

Miha

Boy, i totally missed the part about entering the SAW event. The advice Dick and Ray posted is very sound.

I ran the 55Wo on 26 cells when I did the 80mph passes. Motor Viper 740/10.

mmm 26cells?
Joerg, maybe you have read in the Hopf forum, that I want to try something with the cyclon mono3.

What I want to know is,
what cells where you using?
And can I race the "for example" RC3000 cells "almost empty" with the 55wo?...or will it get way to hot and burn-out
on 26 cells and 20 cells. or 30??? with the 9wind motor!
but 32cells....mmm no I'm not gonna try that. is also very heavy.
Amps.... over 45Amp???

Did you use also that v937/3 prop? and if you did. Was it also bend after 1 run?

Thanks!
Gruss,
Willem :D

@ Willem

I replied on raceboats.de and I think also on Hopf forum on questions concerning your motor and controller combination for Hydro III class.

My 740/9 and Schulze 55Wo (BTW spec'd @ 65/80 A) go toghether very well on 20 cells. After the run the controller and motor are both slightly warm, but I think this is due to the fact that very hot 20 cell pack is very close to them. I am running timing 3 and 4 and with better cells this will be just right for nice Hydro III action  See the video (http://modelarji.kelt.si/frontend/strani/tekme2001/7oktober_koseze/MOV04419.MPG).

...which is for granma racing :p

@Joerg

Nice to hear 740/10 + 26 cells can do 80. So there is some hope in 740/9 on 30 cells and 1 beep ;)

Hi Miha!

I saw the video. What a screamer! :D
But I don't think I will race HYDRO III.
Why...because when it is upside down. (yes I know, it is very hard to do that...or easy ;) ) but still I like to jump/fly over waves.
And race on, when the boat was upside down.

We have hardly flatwater. (only small waters have that at our place, for my mini-hydro!) But I need big waters for this baby. ;)
The cells are getting better and better, so I will problebly take the 9 winder.

But the question about going 90kmh for about 5min,
in a MONO III....well...I got different answers on that one.
What do you think?! the cyclon as been clocked at 124kmh! at 3.5minutes. Don't know that for sure!?

See Ya!

I ran an Octura 1950 on that combo. CP1700 cells. The controller shut off after 2 passes, so 1 run and thats it.
