How do you know when your pipe is effective. I read things about the sound of "coming on the pipe", but I have no idea what that is suppossed to sound like. There aren't any clubs in my area that run model boats, so I'm all alone on this one. I have a 3.5 picco and between the pipe and 180 header it seems to me that the expansion chamber is too far away from the engine.

If the pipe is too short the power will be down and it will be hard to accelerate and sustain the speed especially at launch and in the conners if the pipe is too long RPM will not be as high as it can be. But will give you more toque to turn a large prop. usually when a boat gets on the pipe it really takes off. If it falls off the pipe it will slow down and is hard to speed up again. Usually it is necessary to pull the pipe out 1/4 inch to remedy this.
With a 180 degree header on a 3.5 motor I use a steel ruler place the end of the ruler on the center of the plug and measure back 3.5 inches to the first convergence (the largest part of the pipe) or from the flange of the header to the convergence would be 8.5 inches, This is measured down the center with a piece of solder and a ruler.
