I just got back from testing my new EV that i built with my new Mega on 12 cells and Fullers hardware.I was pretty surprised when I pulled the trigger. This boat is awesome and the GPS said 44.3.Not to bad for a first run with some old 2000's with melted and cracked cases.I cant wait to get some real batteries.I wish somebody would make a nice looking hatch for these boats. That is the only thing I dont like about them.:)

Mike,

That's very cool - and a significant speed increase - from what I remember the EV was getting just about 30 MPH with the 700 BB, right? I'd be curious what your new run time is.

By the way, you're a lucky bum having unfrozen water right in the back yard! Here's a new team name for you: Team RC Polar Bear. Or, how bout: Tundra Racing

About the hatch, could you try this?: Get a flat piece of plastic and cut it to the size of the hatch. Next glue on a bubble canopy from a retail package - I just got a new MS mouse and the bubble it came in would make a perfect canopy - very smooth. It's thin but filled up with expando-foam it would probably be nice and solid. Same concept as on the boat on the home page.

Have fun! Al.

The lake was frozen at my house but I found an open spot down at the river.I thought about making a flat cover but the sides of the hatch opening are raised and would look kinda funny unless you cut the opening on the boat.I tried my other EV with the 700 Neo today and I only got 20 MPH,Something is not right.Next weekend I am hoping to try my Shovel with the 20/4 Cordite on 8 cells or my 18 cell cat if I can scrounge up some batteries by then.I was really inpressed with the Mega in the EV but the run time was very short.I am thinking of installing a Turbo Trans.

I see what you mean about the raised lip the hatch covers. Hmmm, tricky but I'll bet something could be done - I don't like the hatch either - don't have the boat but I can see it in a catalog.

Is that 18 cell cat you're talking about the one from England - the wooden one? How did that project go?

MikeC

Yes,that is the cat I was talking about.I almost have the finish done and I have the hardware so I can put that on this week.I am just waiting for the motor and 6mm flex from Andrew.I just finished the shovel tonight so I can test that this week.

A new shovel? Boy, I'll tell ya, when you converted over from nitro you didn't mess around - it sounds like you're trying out all the FE models out there! Hopefully we'll get together this spring and I can check out your fleet.

I've got my neat little german project going since Christmas - still in the paint shop for a few more days, then onto the hardware and motor choice. I'm pretty sure I'm going to try one of Andrew's 800's. Have fun Mike! Don't go swimming.

Mike

which prop were you using with the mega?

Andrew,That first run was with a X442 and I water cooled the motor with an aluminum coil and everything was nice and cool.I think I may be able to go bigger on the prop.I really need to get some good batteries first.

Mike

that sounds good

Try an M series cut iue remove most of the tongue on the X442

or cheaper - try a K42 and up from Graupner - these props are M cuts and they have lower pitch

you may find 42, 42.5 or 45 give better performance still - cant hurt for $12 all up.

Mike,

You can try a x445, but be careful of heating up the MEGA, watercooled or not. Is this a 3T. I use a x442 in my Seaducer and is about right for sprint.

Thanks for all the responses.I cant wait until next weekend to try it out again.

Thanks

Hey voepel,Have you ever checked your speed with a GPS? I am curious what your Seaducer runs with that motor and prop.I cant beleive the difference between the Mega and my 700 Neo.These Mega motors are really powerful.

Mike,

Have not had a chance to measure top speed, but my guess is 40-45mph with x442. A buddy of mine has a radar now or I might buy the Garmin Etrex GPS.

I have not tried a 700 Neo but the regular 700 (8.4V) is no comparison. Just be careful with this motor and your batteries. 5 laps and you are usually done, else things get hot fast even with watercooling.

I guess I am doing ok with 44 then.It seemed high but I guess that where I should be.

Thanks

Hello Guys,

Steve,
Have not had a chance to measure top speed, but my guess is 40-45mph with x442.

I don't want to bum you out but we're running in the upper 30's, I doubt very much were hitting 40. I imagine if I really geared up spinning the x450 maybe, but I think it would kill the motor.

Paul.

Paul,

I await the thaw for real radar timing. Luckily, I don't have any fish stories to tell.

I timed it with the GPS and it said 44.3.I will try it again this weekend to verify it.I am going to try and get it on video this time.If you would like to send me your boat maybe I could get you to hit 40 :D

Hey Paul, have you to tried that Mega on direct drive yet? Maybe that TT is slowing you down.

You guys are making we wonder if I didnt clear the top speed on my GPS before I ran the boat.I am going to have to take it out tomorrow after work to check it again.I am almost positive I cleared it though and it said 44.I will post my speed tomorrow.

Hello Mike,

Hey Paul, have you to tried that Mega on direct drive yet? Maybe that TT is slowing you down.

Steve's Mega powered Seducer is direct drive, my Mega powered Titan is on the TT. Both the boats run toe to toe on the water, the only deference is I can run several more laps after the DD boat is done. I think the Main difference between the EV and our boats are weight, ours being heavier than an EV.

I am thinking about getting a TT myself. The run time I got was very very low.I should have some nice new cells next week to do a good run time check.I am going to try those Moltech 2500's,You cant beat the price on those.

the runtime should be 90 secs on strong hard power its all you will need to take the wood !

Hello Mike,

I am going to try those Moltech 2500's,You cant beat the price on those.

You won't be disappointed with those cells, I have well over 100 of them and they rock. Last summer I raced against some of the so called "best batteries" and gave nothing up in speed plus the capacity is incredible!!

One tip for ya, charge them at 5 amps and run them hot of the charger. Belive me, these cells like the heat. I've had those cells so hot at the end of a run I couldn't hold them, not once or twice but MANY times and all my records show no loss in performance. As a matter of fact several of my packs gained between 100 to 300 MWHR in capacity.

Paul I have these batteries also. I think they should call them Moltec 3000 all of mine are over 3000 mwhr. The voltage is not there compared to the nicd though isn't this where the extra speed comes from 1.3 - 1.4 versus 1.5-1.6.

Paul

Hello Ray,

My voltages are up there around 1.155 to
1.168, I imagine pretty close to Nicd voltage.

I took the EV with the Mega out again today and ran it with some better batteries and a X640 and I hit 27 mph on GPS.There is no way that first run was 44 because 27 seems pretty fast so I cant even imagine this thing going 44.I think I cleared the max speed on my GPS while I was driving to the river last time and it must have saved 44 mph while I was driving.Boy do I feel like an idiot,27 dosnt sound like much but it sure looked real fast.I was getting 25 mph with my 700 BB and a 645.

Mike

I sent you email about advancing the timing and going to a smaller rather than a higher pitch prop.

Test at each advance setting for what suits your hull prop combo.

Also if you could send some pics that would help

To get good speeds you need get the hull, driveline and prop optimised
