Wow! What a great idea! It sounds like a perfect fit for a micro hull with Lithium cells.

Putting the transmitters in a console is not to difficult, I'm redesigning a transmitter for my Battlebot since I don't think either wheel or stick is just right for it. I would guess the real trick would be to make the components durable to the kind of abuse that rental equipment goes through. The simple (and probably cheaper) solution would be to simply tether cheap AM radios to a console. I'm sure someone (Andy?) could design and build him a console, maybe even a smaller company like Hitec would be interested, the concession RC market is there, they have RC car rentals at all the fairs and carnivals around here these days.
