HI,
just wondering everyones opinion on the best type of material for doublers(transom, motor area, turnfin). I have been using basswood and mahogany since I use blindd nuts 99% of the time. Thanks for your thoughts.

I use 1/8" birch ply. It prevents the directional grain problems you get with others, and it tougher than bass and lighter than mahogany. And cheaper, too.

I have laminated 1/32 Bich ply with the grain at 90 degrees to get the thickness. I also thru bolt my rudder bracket.

Both Jim and Andy are good solutions.

I've occassionally used composite material if I can find it. Basically fiberglass circuit board material without the copper coating.

Thanks for the suggestions. I thought that birch ply was Supposed to be an inferior wood as compared to others. But I will take your advice and use it anyway. Maybe I'm getting it confused with some ither type of wood.

I think you're confusing different ply types. Birch ply is the aircraft ply (3 or 5 ply) that we most often use in the hobby. It is usually from Scandinavia.
I think what you are thinking of is Poplar ply, usually known as "Liteply" , most often seen as 3 ply. As a doubler to build up thickness for the use of blind nuts, I have used liteply often. I also usually CA the blind nuts in as well.
