View Full Version : Hacker Master controllers - the good oil!

Last week I posted on specials I am running on the Mega/Hacker motors and Jeti/Master controllers.

As the controllers are made in the same factory I was challenged on the small price premium of the Hacker Master over the Jeti controllers.

After further investigation I am satisfied the Hacker Master controllers justify their price. More significantly I do not believe they should be compared to the current Jeti controllers but rather to the Schulze controllers.

The Master controllers carry class leading feature in their software and hardware. These features are unique to Hacker Master controllers.

The software

Hacker explicitly acknowledges the joint design and production effort between Hacker and Jeti on the new controllers.

The software is the first and most significant difference between the Jeti and Master controllers.

Developed to Hacker’s specifications the software provides 4 timing options – #1 is optimized for Hacker motors. The other 3 steps ensure the Master controllers can be optimized for the widest possible range of brushless motors.

For the Master 40-3P and up, variable operating frequencies maximise the efficiency of the controller/motor packages under different throttle/load combinations

Jeti controllers have fixed timing and fixed operating frequencies.

The hardware

New hardware protects the controller from electrical spikes, achieves high levels of flexibility and allows control to be maintained in the case of overheating

To improve reliability and performance of the Master controller Hacker specified a controller carrying circutry to cut voltage spikes reaching the controller.

These spikes are worst at part throttle. They heat the FETs and increase internal resistance thereby reducing efficiency. They can also damage the controller.

The Jeti does not carry this componentry.

To provide maximum flexibility the Master controller’s voltage cutoffs were designed to ensure they respond smoothly and reliably with 6 and 7 cell packs.

Jeti's controlers operate best at 7 cells plus.

Also, under thermal overload the Master controllers enter partial shutdown. This enables the model to be flown to a safe landing.

All up these changes have produced controllers who matched with the Hacker motors meet or exceed the standard set by the previous class leaders.

The Master 99 for instance has an on resistance of .7 milliohms – the same as the Schulze 88/105. The 99-3p copes with up to 24 cells the 88/105 with 17. Uner static load the Master 99 has endured 130amps loads for 10 seconds – typical of F5B workloads - without signs of distress. This is the equivalent of the overload rating for the Schulze 105

Rainer uses a Master 77 in his own Hotliner and has subjected it to 10 second runs in excess of 120+ amps without problems. This performance is comparable to the f80 / f102

Best of all there are new low resistance FAI controllers in the pipeline.

Finally

Using the 70 amp controller for direct comaprison

the Jeti 70 is approx $99-$110 street price
the Hacker Master 70-3P $157
the Schulze 70Po $252

Or the Hacker 77-3P 30 cell controller will be approx $241
Schulze 80Fo 27 cell controller is approx $378

In short the Master controllers operate at the current extremes of high performance with features, flexibility and price which make them outstanding value

I'll let you know how the Master 99 works out.

I'm pretty excited to see the specs they offer. Looks like I can run the 99 on anything from 8 to 24 cells. In the past it's taken 2 different Schulze controllers (105wo 7-17 cells or the 102wo 16 to 24 cells) Best part, the 99 is a bunch less money then either Schulze controller.

I'm not knocking the Schulze, but if the Hacker holds up it'll be tough to beat, bang for your buck.

Hey Andrew,
Thanks for the info!!! It's sounds to me like Jeti will be building these in large numbers therefore can offer comparible features to the Shulze controllers yet at a better value. I heard that Shulze builds only small numbers at a time therefore they cost more per unit. Competition in the marketplace is a beautiful thing!!!

How much will the 99 Master be going for?

Two questions.

What about water cooling?

Who will repair a broken controller? I hope they don't have to be returned to Jeti. That may take a while.

A few changes from your e-zone post would have been in order prior to posting here ;)

What is interesting is the volume of reply posts between the two sites from your original postings, and the nature of the queries & comments.

People ask me why I'm not in the brushless business. The Jeti/Hacker Master is a good example why - a tremendous financial and time commitment must be made, and both are resources beyond my means at this time.

Besides, the only reason I got into the ESC business in the first place is because everything else out there was unsuitable and unreliable. Hacker, Shulze, Jeti, et al all have suitable products. If only they were water PROOF.

Gotcha - The change would have helped but I wanted to ensure I gave exactly the same info. But your are right flying the boat home is a bit optimistic
