In 1993 i built a billing boat white star. Since about 1995 it has lay used used in the loft. i'm currectly repairing it for use again.
My question is that from what i remembered it was quite slow and could not go in reverse very well. Is this because the prop shaft is at about a 20 degree angle? or purely because the motor is not powerful?.
If it is the motor is there any recommended fast motors i can buy??
Please help

More than likely it is the prop. The Billing props are built for scale look and are not very efficient, especially in reverse. I have always replaced the props with Graupner or Midwest brand props.
I also always replaced the whole drive shaft at the time that I built the boat. Since you have the shaft in place, I believe that you will have to use a Graupner prop as the shaft is in millemeters.
Try your local Hobby Shop, or Hobby Lobby on line for mm prop.

I bought My uncle the blue star, I think this is a little larger, we changed the motor to a graupner 600 7.2, running it through a 3 to 1 reduction, and a 447 prop, it goes ok , but I think the biggest draw back of this boat design is the big skeg down the middle of the boat (the prop shaft goes through this) this effectively hides alot of the prop, if I were to rebuild this boat for him the first thing that would be done would be to cut that off and relace it with a submerged strut, a little more work, but I think the benefits would be well worth it, or switch to twin drives and leave the skeg, a couple of speed 500's or even 480's and trannies and a couple of octura 480's might be very good, anyway my 2 cents, cheers eddie
