That will point you to something I've already posted, plus a new one I hadn't seen before.

Hey Andy that first one looks like something a hobbist could build. The second one though looks like you need to be a machinist with some serious tools to build.

The second one is the LRK motor. A projekt in a german electric flight magazine by 3 individuals: Lucas, Retzbach and Kuehfuss (->LRK).

Several of those motors in different sizes have been build and reviewed. As far as I know you can buy parts for these motors over here, so you don't need to be a machinist to build one.

But these are high torque and low rpm motors. They let the can rotate (magnets), an opposite construction to what we run in boats.

They are made for planes without the need of a gear drive. If you want a motor like that there is a german company called Koehler (I think). They are building these types of motor for some years. They even build special controllers.

Hi Guys
Just some further information about motors that Joerg was referring to. Their website is:
http://www.actro.de/

My LHS imports these motors and a friend (Who I used to race FE boats with 20 years ago) has one in a 1/4 scale Extra airplane.
He uses the 40-4 model motor on 30 cells. It turns a 16 X 6 prop at 8500 rpm (around 89% eff.) direct drive! This is equal to a good four stroke 120! These motors are incredible, but not for us. They are low rpm, huge torque and use their own sensorless BL speed controls (they are also expensive).:)
