I just want to take a second to say what I think about this contest.

I have been on this forum for a while and between all the bickering and useless arguments I sort of tend to stay away.

Now I check in and see this build contest and how everyone is working together. This is great and just the kind of thing we need to be doing. I am very excited to be a part of it and build a boat from plans. What a great idea for someone like myself who has a little experiance with RC boats but has never built one from scratch with plans. This forum will provide all the help I need if I get stuck or confused.

Thanks to everyone who is donating there time and the discounts on products.

Tom, glad you like it!!

Don, Donnie and the whole RumRunner crew have been really pushing this, and there is more to come,

We will be doing a lot of cool stuff, some of the ideas floating around is, Mono Plans, more hydro plans, watts per dollar, quite a few things, it is neat to see everyone build something that they can then race in the new season,

If you guys are happy then we are happy... I am so geeked by the idea of looking through all the threads... seeing the folks as they build their hydros...I was reading a few of them today and already learned some cool tips. like the undersize cutting of the notches, (thanx dr. jet) , the heavy weight instead of pins (thanx ken) lots of good stuff, plus everyone is writing the history of the boat, not required but very cool...

I know you fellas must feel the way we do, tired of the bickering, tired of the finger pointing, the way we figure it you can't point fingers if they are glued to your boat LOL....

From Myself and the other Mods, and The whole team, Thank you for your kind words, it does mean a lot!!!
just made the whole damn thing worthwhile

Rock on!!!!

Ken, try holding it over a steaming pot of water to steam the wood, you might be surprised how pliable it becomes!

I'm getting close to locking up a hull for myself, you rat you took one of my all time favorites!!! ;)

A little downy fabric softner in boiling water I think it is 12 water to 1 downy and soak the plywood for about an hour and you can do amazing things with it.

Back to the original topic for a while, I really appreciate someone providing the motivation for me to build another 1/16th hydro. I have always liked these little boats and they are a HOOT to run. It seems the intrest in this class of boats has been waining over the years. With everybody appearing to head towards higher cell counts, bigger hulls, HUGE (expensive) motors, it's refreshing to see N-2 (and in some cases, N-1) boats hitting the water. There is NO WAY I could fit a T-Offshore boat on my pond without hitting something solid like a bridge, a rock, or just plain old terra firma.

Jay Turner had a short build article in his 1995 book, "The Basics of Fast Electric R/C Boats" on building the XS-Cat. This has always intriuged me as an easy to build hull with lots of possibilities. Maybe the NEXT competition should be for an N-2 Offshore hull. Maybe make mono and cat plans available so there would be a choice.

Maybe the ultimate goal of these competitions could be to build a fleet of N-sized boats. Fast, Cheap, and definately, Out of Control.

Nope, the ultimate goal of these type of contest should be to remember why we got into the hobby in the first place, for fun, and the great people you meet, it is a way for friends and/or family to do a project together, remember going down to the LHS, with lawn mowing money, coming away with some sticks and a tube of ambroid... and goin up to your room or out to the garage to build something??? didn't cost an arm and a leg, it was great fun, and let you lose yourself for awhile, that's what hobby's were originally for...
Then we have guys working together, here, instead of peeing in each others fruitloops, you got people locating this, people making that, I think it is cool as heck, and you gents impress the sh%t out of me!! well done.. keep at gents.. :hail:

Now that brings back memories. How did you know?

My dad was building models before Ambroid. I still have an Ohlson Pacemeker he built in 1935. Back then they took toothbrushes and melted them in acetone to make glue!

And people wonder why I am the way I am. :rolls:

Yes Eddie, you are right. This is a lot of fun, and I'm learning a whole lot more than I would if I had just gone to the LHS and bought a bunch of wood.

I'm amazed at the help I'm getting from various people. For example, Al P is bending over backwards to help me out. I only wish I could return the favor.

I think this is going to be a BIG success and I commend you for your heroic effort. Kudos need to go to the vendors that are supporting this project, to Garry and the guys at RR for releasing the plans for "mass consumption", and finally, to the participants.

You guys ROCK!!!

Well,I just bought a bunch of wood yesterday.

But I hope it becomes something better when I'm done.

I will be trying a new technique ( for myself that is) by making a vacuum form plug as per Dr.Jet's advice.

I wouldn't say I've bent over backwards, but I have worked with Dr.Jet to produce some fine looking hardware.Which is about 1/2 way finished.
