while you guys are building and in early stages, yet, one thing I have tried that works real well for water intake, is the bottom of the sponson, use the right sponson, this is a tip I saw from Doug Twaits Sr., basically run the brass tube down on the inside corner of the sponson (inside) after the sponson bottoms are on, you will then cut it flush with the bottom, on the very bottom you will also file a small channel for the water to flow into, I will post pics tommorrow, but thought I would give you some food for thought, I also exit my water out through the other sponson, as was protypical of the 80 bud.... this way keeps everything tidy inside the hull, more to follow

Eddie, don't you mean the water pickup should be in the left sponson? The right sponson often lifts in the corners, especially in rough water impeding water flow.

Eddie,

You are stealing my secrets again! I had planned to do just that. The Black Diamond hull I have listed in the Swap Shop has that same style water pickup in it. Take a close look at the photo of the bottom.

I was planning to put a tube with the lower portion angled forward in the outside portion of the sponson bottom (not in the ride plate surface). Then I would file a small channel as you suggested, and as in the aforementioned photo.

Garry mounts his on the right sponson, others on the left. Take your pick!

Cheers,

yeah i Guess it makes more sense on the left, but I have most of my sponson type pick ups on the right, and it seems there is plenty of water coming out, maybe too much, either side you choose, It is still sweeter then having hoses and stuff routed through the whole hull, however it does make changing the side you mounted it on a bit more difficult, LOL here is an even funkier idea, how about having two sponson tubes, one with the channel facing forward, one facing aft, then the water is being forced in and sucked out, creating a lot of waterflow, is this desirable? dunno, it could be like a car radiator, if the water doesn't flow slow enough you actually have less cooling as the water cannot absorb the heat becasue it is traveling too fast,??? thoughts to ponder...

The only problem with sponson-mounted pickups - left or right - is that on a hydro or rigger going full tilt at the end of each straight, almost none of the sponson is in contact with the water. This means that for at least part of each lap there is an interrupted water flow. This may not matter that much - or it may. Rudder or roostertail-mounted pickups don't have that problem. All pickups cause some drag, but an overheated ESC means the boat stops.

I like Joerg's comment on water cooling that exits above the waterline - "pessimists" do that....otherwise there is no advantage.

haha That's classic. My exit dumps in the tunnel on more than one of my boats. I do have one that spits out the top of the hatch. Looks silly but that was kinda the intent. It is a pain in the butt though. The hatch is still hooked to the boat when you want to work on it.

The only advantage to having the water exit in an obvious place on the hull, is that when it passes by you can see if water is coming out. I've overheated gas boat motors by not paying attention to that exit stream during a race.
