Hey guys, coming soon I’m coming out with a old-style, kneel down outboard hydro. It will be a laser-cut cut and will include a vacuum formed motor hood that looks like an old Mercury outboard, with a laminated ply leg. In reality be an outdrive. The drive system will be conventional flex drive. Also part of the kit will be a balsa driver figure that you do final shaping of from laser cut laminations. The hull is 16 inches and total length is about 20 inches with the outboard.
I’m thinking of packaging it as the hull, dummy outboard and driver. And then offer an optional flex drive hardware package with it also with a basic 400 motor. We think the hull will handle hotter setups without much problem. The drive is a flex octura .098 and uses parts from a Fuller outdrive.
That gives a choice of just building for display, using the drive system too, or buying your own outboard and maybe putting the motor hood parts over it to make it look old-style.
I should point out this is the concept and design of my buddy Randy Timmerman, who is a long time modeler and antique outboard nut. He has a cool job of producing wind tunnel race car models for IRL and NASCAR here in Indianapolis.
Check out my web site for more info. I’ll let you know soon of the release date. No pricing yet.
So whatdya think?

Next Build competition? Mine won't be scale, just a racer. (wink, wink) Maybe another application for a small-diameter NeuMotor. An 1110 1.5D with an X427 should make it an insane goer! Maybe an 1105 1.5Y would work as well and not be so "over the top".

DOPE Thats cool. I have been trying to finish a flat bottom outboard for a few years now. But that is cool.

Doug's kits are well designed, and I assume this new one would make an excellent first model for the aspiring boat racer. With the pre-engineered outdrive system, setups should be easy. With all this trend towards bigger, faster, more powerful, and more expen$ive boats, I really like to see things like this come on the market.
There has been a lot of discussion recently regarding "entry-level" racing, N-1 versus N-2, 19T motors in N-1 versus 27T, what is "too slow" to keep interest in the class and so forth. A little hydro like this with a cheap Speed 400 motor, cheap ESC, small batteries (GP1200's?), and pre-engineered outdrive, this micro-hydro would make an excellent entry-level racer. Fast, cheap, and (with me driving) out of control. What more could you ask for?
Picture this: A half-dozen "novice" drivers running a small oval zigging and zagging all over the place with these quick little boats. There is the potential for real entertainment value lurking just around the next bouy. Now picture this: Seasoned builders racing with spec Speed 400 motors and batteries. Setup and driving skills will determine the winners, not how much money you can throw at the boat.
I see "Speed 400 Club Class Hydro" racing in the future. Good job Doug!

I edited my thread start about this too. But I want to give credit to my long time buddy Randy Timmerman for the original concept and design of this kit. He has the same vision as Dr. Jet's quote above. Randy has been a modeler since probably he was 4 years old and continually creates some incredible models. He may not want me to tell you this, but he also has several antique/racing outboards in his basement!

Put me on the list for one. I think I have several Speed 400 motors lying around, and maybe even an ESC or two.

Doug excellent idea to bring back the old outboard hydro racer with modern power.
You may as well start on one sized for a regular r/c car size 6 cell pack with a 19T someone previously mentioned. That one may revitalize N1 hydro and will be an even bigger hit!

Check out the website. The first batch of 25 kits are ready to go. You can get these first ones direct from me for now.
If you want the running hardware , I can sell the essential parts without instructions for now. I'm thinking most of you guys don't need 'em anyway.
Contact me about that.
Runs good with 400 motor and 6-8 small cells. Try your setup as you like!
I'll post some more info soon.
