View Full Version : Wood boat, nitro power?

I've been experimenting with my first nitro boat (BBY volcanic splash) and am impressed with the performance that the little OS engine gives.

I've built some scale fast electrics in the past like the Ferrari Arno XI and the Miss Adventure, but I was thinking about building another Ferrari or a Chris-Craft with nitro power. Has anyone tried a scale mahogany hull with nitro power? Will one fuel spill kill the varnish? I hate to spend tons of hours building a scale hull to ruin it with a single fuel spill. Any thoughts on this?

Hi Zach,

The plans at www.newtonmarine.com are intended for nitro power. Most guys are finishing with epoxy paints now as they are more durable and resist fuel better than most other paints.

Contact Doug Twaits snobuster@webtv.net and ask him to help you out with nitro power in wood boats. A lot of guys do it. You need to get to some of the District 1 nitro races.

You can also get a schedule from Norm Barksdale normanstormin@webtv.net - Norm lives down near you, to boot!

Thanks Andy, I'll check it out. I wouldn't mind seeing an electric race either. Do they ever have any in this part of the country? I keep thinking I'd like to build an LSH, but I don't want to travel too far to race it.

Yes. Norm can give you the schedule. It's supposed to be on the website www.district-1.com but nobody has edited it yet. Norm and I have had an awful time trying to get together so I can show him what to do.

DON'T go by the website!

The racing is either in Middletown NY or Randolph NJ (near Lk Hopatcong). All the races the rest of this year are on Sundays :(
