i had planned on a mono for LSO to race next season, but have decided on a cat. i'm a big fan of H&M hulls and was looking at a drifter. which would be better for 700 power, the drifter s or the L? set up right, i think either may get the job done, the small one will probably have speed, and the larger of the two may prove more stable. this will be a winter build, so i have time to work all this out.

S for lso. I have an s and its fast with the 700. But its hard to tame it in the turns.

Take a look at the H&M M1 Supercat S. Jay Turner has one, it is a little wider than the Drifter S and I think better looking.

Here is one bad cat (http://www.montanadesign.com/videos/Kitty1.jpg). My favorite flavor ;)

The H&M website lists the M-1S as being wider than the Drifter S and was one reason I bought one, but when I held one of each cat side-by-side the bottoms were identical - same steps, same width.
It is possible to improve the turning capability of the M-1S/DrifterS, but it has nothing to do with filling in steps or adding non-trips. ;)

OK, I'll bite . What mods could accomplish this ? Have Drifter S, SS1, 212D, X637, 16 cells Fine offset rudder. Besides improving my driving skills which I'm practicing weekly, any suggestions ?
Tony
Hi Guys,
OK, I'll bite . What mods could accomplish this ?
Simple, skeg strut and a longer rudder.

My Drifter S has an offset rudder Octura strudder with a skeg. ( OC6 )
Bought the hardware from Steven @ OffshoreElectrics.com
It actually turns quite well & handles great.
Typical ( cheater LSO ) SS1, Astro 212D, x637, 16 cells.

The L is too slow with a SS1 motor..too stable...actually boreing...

If you take the time to research H&M's site they specify a certain rudder for each type of hull. Thier hardware is also second to NONE.
You just need the right size and type of rudder.
I just received my shipment from H&M and very impressed with the rudder for my Maritimo (Drifter L'ish with more personality).
On the left, Drifter S or my 32" Classic shovel nose
On the right Drifter L, Maritimo etc... IT'S BIG!!!

i was thinking of getting H&M hardware to go on the drifter as well. it looks like good stuff. the only thing i'd change is the strut, i have a thing for ball bearings.

has anyone ever modified a cat to be self righting? do you think there's room in a hull like the drifter s for a flood chamber? self righting capability may send me back to mono's if i can't do it with a cat.

I don't think the cat can roll back over like a mono when weighted to one side. Just my 2 cents....it would be interesting to know if anyone has done it.

On our full scale race tunnels builders use sponson thinkness, offset motor placement, and weight distribution to make the boats track slightly to the left for cornering. At speed the boat should prop walk in the direction of the prop rotation. I have not idea if all the the above is true when you come down to model scale, but in theory to should do something?!?!

Hey jimi911... Do you run the class with Seebolds? Tim's grandpa (Bill, Sr.) just redid my prop for my bassboat....wow it has more lift and top end without taking away my holehsot. He is 91 and just bought 2 more welders...guess he is going to live forever. He signed the prop which was kinda cool.
Just saw you were were a tunnel fan. Ever race at Creve Coure lake in St. Louis?
