Greetings from down under
I'm building a large boat 1 metre long mono hull,my question is how much weight can I sacrifice to the cells, I have been toying with the idea of using Cyclon X cells these are heavy at 360 gm ea but are 2 volt and 5 Ah high discharge, the motor I have is a 12 volt blower motor, rated at 1 hp at 8000 rpm. the weights add up to the equivalent of a nitro boat power train, is this feesable or just stupid?

the feasibility depends on what you are trying to achieve

For a fast surface drive boat you are choosing a very difficualt route to success as the motor has a low rpm/v figure

For a scale boat the output shaft speed and lead acid cells will be fine

For a surface drive boat a motor giving 20,000+ rpm at the prop and 18-24 nicad cells will produce a better result with a planing hull

Added later - the overgearing is feasible but you will have to change to a high discharge cell type and your current draw will rise and torque will be cut in proportion to the gear ratio

you could do that and maybe put a 1:2 overdrive on it! 1/2hp@16000rpm, somwhere around there! that would be a great motor for a scale boat! a while ago i put a 14.4volt drill motor in one of my boats! it had tons of tourque but not a very high speed!
