View Full Version : Proxies?

If I understand correctly, at NAMBA events such as SAWs, one gets a certain amount of time to run their boat. That being said, there is no way I can get to LA this year, but, if I were a NAMBA member in good standing, could I pay entry fees and have a proxy run my boat? Wouldn't this give that person their time and my time on the water as well, assuming I found a person who would go to the trouble?
Curious.

You get 5 minutes but can not touch the boat once it is in the water. This means no adjustments. In the 5 minutes you can run as many boats as you like. This goes in a round robin fashion and you get 4-8 trips depending on how many guys and how many times the rescue boat has to go out.

In our District you are allowed to remove the boat from the water during the 5 minutes, but you cannot touch it between consecutive opposite-direction passes for a record. If you pick it up, you need to make a "first pass" again.

I should have mentioned that these rules are at the discretion of the CD and this was how it ran in L.A.

Understood. But what I'm really after is if I could have someone else run my boat. For example...say you're at the SAW, Andy. In LA. I'm in Virginia, but I paid my NAMBA fees and entry fees, and gave you my boat. Would you be able to run it for five minutes representing me, and run your own as well?
Thanks for the responses.

That's a good question George. It's my understanding the you must drive your own boat. Certianly part of the record equation is driving and in my eyes should count for something.
I have done as you mentioned with my own boats. Years ago I sent my 1/16th scale with Jeff Vasquez to race, although he would be the one to get the credit. As it turned out he got credit for piling it up on the shore! I maintained it was his Futaba radio! I never had that problem with a Hitec! It makes for a good story when we get together now.
See ya,

Piling it up on shore? Yikes! That's the chance you take though, huh?!
Good point about driving your own boat; as far as skill being involved, when one comes down to it, it means more than equiptment.
Having a proxy driver, however, would be the only way I could compete in this year's event. If the record went to the driver, that would be fine with me. I'd find plenty of enjoyment just being the builder (as if I'm going to drop in and break records!).
If this isn't allowable, I won't make an issue of it, I'm just trying to think of a way to participate when it will be impossible to get to LA this year.

George,
There is no "builder of the model" rule like the AMA has for some events. Don built them, Dick and Larry set the records.

Oh, Andy, it doesn't matter about official recognition (though I'd be recognizing it on the board here...Ha!), it would just be fun to do. I'd be tickled just knowing I set up a boat that well, minus on-site tweaks...all about fun, my brother.
I guess what I should do is find out who is running the show in LA this Novemeber (anyone?) and get an official response.
Thanks for the responses.

George the way it was set up someone could run your boat in their aloted time but only drivers were registered so only 5 minutes. Some of the guys were not running that many classes so might be willing to run your boat step in here guys you know who you are.

Thanks Ray. Looks like what I'll do is bring this up again when the SAWs get closer. I'm hoping my life will be settled down enough to make the 2003 event myself, Lord willing.

George
