Ok, I was wondering what kind of wood would you use to build a small rigger around 18 inches long with a 540 motor and 6 cells? I would like to "fiddle" around with one this summer, not planing to race it or anything like that, just play around with it in a river. What would you build one out of from stuff you can get from the hardware store?

Where can I find some good plans for one about the size I want?

well 18 inches is kinda small for a 6 cell hydro with a 540 motor, i would go bigger, i have a jay turner yellow jacket from plans and its very fast, i didnt build rear sponsons for it though and i made the sponsons farther forward, also i run it on 8 cells, but it is very fast on 6. http://www.rcstore.com/

Look here:

There is at least one set of rigger plans. You may have to adjust the size a little (after converting from metric) but, it should work great. You can also find great info on what to power it with.

Or...you can save yourself a lot of time and frustration trying to get a new rigger design set up and running right, (trust me, it takes a lot of development) and simply buy one of the great kits that are currently available for less than $50.
If you want to scratch build, get a buddy to buy the kit with you, pay for half, and scratch another from the kit.

OK, I am 2 hours from the nearest hobby shop, So I went to Lowes, The smallest plywood they had is 1/8 inch.....Is that way to thick?

1/8" ply would be OK for the tub sides, the transom, and bulkheads, but it is a bit thick for anything else.
1/32" inch ply is good for the tub top and bottom.
The sponsons can be wood over foam with a 1/32" ply sheeting as well.
If you are having that much trouble finding wood to build with, perhaps you should look at taking a trip to the hobby shop with a list of all the parts you need.
Riggers are funny little guys. They have to be built right, and out of the correct stuff to work well.

I am determined to build one of these, so a trip to the LHS (not local for me) is necessary!

Well you are half way to becoming a "Rigger" pilot. You will certainly need a lot of determination!
You are in with the best bunch of guys, (and girls, sorry Katie) that will be able to get you up and running.
