OK Dan... spill the beans... what happened in P-Sport and N2-Sport... How'd the boats run?

My N2 sport Hydro was very competitive with the other guys, it was an all Neu class with everyone running LiPo, everyone else had a 1509 1D IIRC. My connection to the cells broke off, but the boat was right there.

P Sport turned out to be a blessing of sorts. Randy loaned me an old UL-1 to race, and I decided not to push it with a monster like the 1521 and went back to my 5 year old Hacker 8XL and a new Castle high amp controller running on a 4s1p setup, the boat was so much faster I could never get it full throttle without blowing it off, so I took the LiPo's & Castle out and put in a 12 cell pack of old SHV 4200's and a Schultze controller I bought when I got the Hacker 8XL. The boat was still kicking some butt and was on rails, then it came to a very abrupt stop and sank in about 2 seconds flat.

Kaiser Cove is an old quarry, I dove it once and will not dive it again, there are cables and machinery and it's an extremely dangerous dive and I will not dive it again, it's also a deep dive averaging about 50 -80 feet. That's the first boat I have ever lost, I sunk quite a few, but being a certified rescue and search diver, I have always recovered them. Thanks to Randy for taking it so well!!! :yeah:

My new hull should be here by Wednesday, I hope to have it ready for our race next Saturday, thank God I didn't have any of me new equipment in it! 8)

Larry "T-Bone" Theobold loaned me a Nomadio radio to try out, I'm sold, That was the nicest radio I have ever held and I was instantly comfortable with it! I'm going to have to retire my old JR 756 after 10 years of faithful service!!!

I'll post some pics later.

Excellent... great to hear that Dan... 1509 1Ds!!! Seems like WAY too high KV with Lipos... Those guys had to have been turning 49,000 RPM on 2S packs... What are they running... X430 props or ??? Interesting motor choices...

Do post pics... Glad the little 1506 worked out for you... it's a good motor for a light hull...

The more I think about it, the more I seem to remember that Randy ran a 6xl with a x64_ prop on it. Yeah, the one's running 1509's were all running 430 size props or cut 632's.

dan,

I was running a 1515 1d 440/3.... runs ok not sure if this is the set-up yet, honestly never tested any other props. I'll squeez more out of the n-2 for sure.

That is if the hull survives double duty of p-sport until I get the new one done...... wish me luck!!!

Chris (L) and T-Bone (R) from Castle Creations tied for second place in N2 Mono, but Larry took it on time. They were both running out of the box Castle Creations Mamba Max systems!!!

Well, like I always say, the mind is the second thing to go........ ;)

(I did know that or I would have put a bigger prop on!) :)

Good to see Slaney and Heater Head out there! That is, I'm assuming "John" is H.H. Or is it another John??

LiPo's, too.

Randy-How did the 6XL do in N-2 Sport for ya?? I was impressed with mine when I ran it last month.

Dan Chase

It was another John, Sorry can't remember his last name. Heater Head was supposed to show, but had to back out at the last minute. All the sport hydros were pretty even.

As for LiPo, we had 3 diferent packs puff with 3 diferent drivers, Still waiting to see that cost saving's! ;) No doubt that they are a LOT faster then Ni-xxx even when running a 1p setup like most of mine were.

BTW: all the packs that puffed were 2p setups... :rolls:

Love the Cabover Dan!! Which cells were you running in it?

Which cells were you running in it?

I'd be interested in knowing that as well... We've had two practice days and two complete race weekends running some of the fasted stuff I've ever seen... I think we've only lost one cell out of the whole club...

We're running either the Neu 4900s or PolyRCs... No MaxAmps or cheap cells...

If you guys are trying to run Neu motor setups on cheap cells, you're likely to run into issues...

I've never had a 2S2P pack come in from a heat or testing over 110 degrees... Running them at 1P, I've had temps as high as 160 degrees... and still no "puff"... Paralleled them back up and they're right back to 100 degrees again... These are all the 20C cells... I've yet to get any really good racing data documented on the new 30C PolyRC cells I just got... hopefully next race...

Thanks, Scott, but I wish I could take credit for it, but John Sauter built it, he did a great job, it has some interesting details, like skulls epoxied in the inside of the hull!

We are still learning about LiPo in our club, the rule proposal caught us off guard and I have been running them longer then anyone else in the club, but only started this year. Most of the opther guys first experiance with them was this last weekend. Everyone was running fairly conservative setups that have been tried before. I never saw any of them go over 120 degrees, most were a little over 100 degress. Temps that day were in the low 90 degrees.

I have been to 3 races this year, WW III in Arizona, the Valdosta Georgia SAW's and now our race. I have seen at least one LiPo pack puff at every race. Interesting that they were all the same brand. I guess I'll have to buck up again and buy some good cells, but the one's I want have been in short supply so far.

I ran a 5XL in the N2 Sport (My new shovel) Hydro with a 42MM it ran a bit hot on the cells and the speeds were balistic I needed water cooling on the SC and after three laps I would thurmal every 1/4 lap

I hear ya. The testing I've done w/the Maxamps packs has taught me that they don't like anything over 10 C for offshore heats. 8C is better. They can handle a bit more for sprints, like 12-15 C.

I'd be interested in knowing what setups you guys had issues with and if they mirror what I've been seeing.

With that said-all brands have been puffed by boat racers!

Hi David, I'll try and get the setups from the other guys. I was running Darin's setup in mine except for the hull, it was a 1506 1Y with a stock x632 prop sharpeend and detonged a bit. The hull was a light aussie cabover with a wire drive. Of course, no binds and the boat was not running loose, but it wasn't glued to the water either. I'll check with the guys to see what they were running.

Dan,

With that hull, you MIGHT be able to get by with a larger prop... It's a revver, not a torquer, so you may find that things loosen up a bit with an X435 or something like that..... Play around with it and let me know what you come up with... Maybe a Y535 would work well too...

I just got the boat done 6 hours before it hit the water for the first time, so I only made one minor ajustment to the strut during the day. She has a LOT more left in her! I was thinking the y535 with some detonguing might do the trick, I'm hoping to get a little testing in this week before our next race this Saturday.

I think you're probably right... That's a good combo for a lightweight hull, if the hull can be tuned to run fast without needing the weight... The only reason I always stuck with the X632 on my DPI is that the hull itself did NOT like a bigger prop... it would dance all over the place in the back-end and I couldn't seem to tune it out... Put the X632 back on and it would just fly!

Keep us posted... you have a cool looking boat there!

I'll also be running a 2s2p 10,000 Mah pack, so that should help some as well. :D

That race was LIVE!!!
I would like to propose another activity for the end of the day..

After all heats were over, Larry (T-Bone) Theobold and I decided instead
of bench racin' and smack talkin' let's go head up
DRAG RACE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

WAY fun!!! one of the funnest things I've done with a boat
I want this thing to go like the movie Grease

The rules are there aint no rules..
Any motor any hull any battery or cell count versus anything..
whatever the two guys want to send down

If you've got a P-mono that you think can whip my N-2 sport, Bring it!!
