What kind of foam do you guys recommend to put into homemade wood boats? I want to fill my sponsooms on my rigger with foam but am not sure what kind of foam to use. I was thinking foam spray in insilation but I heard it expands in the heat and breaks apart the boat so what brand doesn't do that? Thanks

Blue or pink building foam is good. It's real cheap too. Many sponsons are actually made completely of it, then just a ride pad is sheeted onto the bottom and another on top for strength.

I am talking about spray in insilation I already built the sponooms and want to fill them with foam can't u read I already said that. I want to know a good brand that doesn't expand more in the heat and push the seams out.

Hey Rebel, there is no spray foam that won't expand when heated by the suns rays unless it is allowed to cure about 60 days. and in the sponsons it doesn't get enough air to care properly so it will take a lot longer than that.
What Jeff was saying was the way to do it is make your sponson from blue/pink foam then cover them. as far as I know that is the way everyone else does it. works great......... Larry

Well my sponsooms are already made out of wood exept the back flat peice isn't on them yet but you guys think I should just cut out the shape from blue foam and stick it in them from the back opening?

I would try that first and if it didn't work I would just make new ones.............. just my 2 cents...........either way good luck

It sure wasn't clear from your post above that you already built them.

Step 1 of any project should be planning it through to completion. Since you skipped that step you are going to be stuck with something sub-par.

Your best bet is like he said - cut blocks to fit inside the sponsons.

My compliments on your degree of restraint, Andy

You could try the cylindrical foam pipe insulation, although I don't know if you have enough room to cram it in.

The flotation might not be as good, but it's better than nothing.

Hey Doug thats what I'v been saying. And Andy it was planeed all the way through but my plans kind of got ruined because some guys told me that wasn't good to use after I had them half built. Some of you guys sure aren't as amart as you claim to be. For now on please post if you have any useful information for me and not critism expecually if you don't even understand what I am saying.

It seemed obvious that since the topic of spray foam has come up several times during the past month or two that you would have read those previous posts before embarking on your own.

Research of prior art is an extremely important part of any endeavor.

FYI - two easy ways to shape foam blocks.

1) bandsaw

2) belt sander

I prefer the latter.

Yes andy I knew how to shape foam already thanks, just cause I'm new to this forum doesn't mean I'm new to the sport. And Doug you shouldn't joke about that my dad actually did that once, he fell off of something and bit his tongue clean off he had to carry it to the hospital in a bucket full of his blodd coming out and the sewed it back on, u can still see that seem today and he can't hardly bend it.

Sorry Brandon, but I guess I was confused by you saying can someone tell me what flex shaft I should use for my outrigger, the part #, the price, and web site or place to order it from. Thank you. I am new to boats and have no clue which shaft to use for my boat.

The "search" button at the top of each page will allow you to find a lot of this information out.

So tell us a little about your background? I see you like "anything RC" but what have you been into?

I'v been into R/C for a few years but this is my first year really in boats but I don't need a flex shaft anymore becuase I found a different drive system that'll be a suprise later when its done I'll post pictures of it for you guys. I'v been into truck racing and pan car racing more of truck racing though.
