Hi folks, over winter I will be building a new hydro, as the old one I have at the moment is far too small for the speed it does now with BL and LiPo, it will be a scale twin wing hydro but I am as yet unsure which one, there are 2 possibilites

(1) The Ron Jones jr twin wing that was, u-31 circus circus, u-102.5 coors dry, u-9 miss exide and u-2 miss Tplus.

This one is easier but more expensive as there are Roger Newton plans for it, and I would need them as I haven't found many pictures of it on the web (any help here appreciated)

(2) The unlimited light twin wing UL-5 bakers equipment/freedom racing, after its rebuild to widen it, I found lots of detailed pictures of it during the rebuild but no good ones of the finished article just a few of it in the spray at speed.

The problem I have is that I have no idea of the size of these beasts, can anyone provide me with length and widths for these hulls full size? I am guessing that for the size of hull I am after (around 30") I would be after a 1:10th Ron Jones jr twin wing or an 1:8th UL-5 but I could be well out for both so if you happen to know these hulls then top banana but if you just know the range of sizes for generic unlimited and unlimited lights from this era ('90s) that would be a big help.

Twin-wing boats are really cool. I built the Coors Dry and raced it to a 1/10th scale championship in 2004. The boat has been sold and run by two other guys since then and ran in 2008. Our club, Classic Thunder got to meet with Ron Jones Jr. and tour his shop. It was a treat to hear his stories and ask questions about boat design and get his opinion on things. You'll find that the boat was 30' long, 14'-3" wide, had a 7'-6" wide tunnel and an afterplane length of 17'-2". You can find these and the dimensions for most unlimiteds built since the 1950's in the Master Hull Roster maintained by R/C Unlimiteds 1/8th scale nitro club. You can find a link to it in the Classic Thunder (www.classicthunder.org)rule book on line or at Newton Marine or R/C Unlimited's web site among other places. I hope that helps you get started. Good luck with the project. For the size you're looking for, you'd be building in 1/12th scale if you built the Unlimited two-wing.

Thanks Coug90 that's great info it looks like hull 92102.5, I thought it stopped racing in '97 but it looks like it carried on as u-9 right until last year, my favourite paint scheme for it so far is the coors dry one but I've only seen the ones I listed above and there's a further 19 sponsors listed for it on the rosta each with there own paint I guess, has anyone got pictures of any of the others?

One thing I don't understand are the numbers in brackets under the dimensions, what are they for?

I am somewhat flexible in size but I think 36" may be a little too big as I will only be giving it 4s, the width at 17" is less than I hoped for for a boat that length too, the widened unlimited light UL-5 is looking better right now, if anyone has dimensions for it that would be fantastic or for any other light that would be good as I have lots of photos and if I knew how wide it was to start i could tell how much they extended it.

I believe the numbers you're wondering about are the dimension ranges allowed for length, width etc in inches if you were to build it in 1/8th scale. I'm not sure when it last raced as a two-wing, but I think the Miss Exide was the last time. The center section was later filled in and it looks like a more typical boat since then. I think that it was designed for running with more power before they started limiting them with fuel restrictions and such. Good luck with the build, whatever you decide on doing. I think the UL-5 two wing was a great looking boat after they widened it. I think that's the boat Kevin Ellsworth used to own. Someone else is running it now. Post some build photos when you get going on it. I'm sure folks would like to see.

So your allowed a little leeway with the dimensions, that's cool do you know if you can use the min for one with the max from another? I would like to squiah the length down to the min making it 35.2" long at 10th scale and stretch the width and tunnel width to max making mine 18.8 wide.
