View Full Version : Question about Airtronics M8...

I've noticed that most of you guys run the Lynx, but there has to be a few of you that run the M8. So, hopefully I'll get a few responses.
Up until a year ago, I ran a KO Precious, which is the older version of the MARS. I ran this thing for 6 years without so much as a glitch. I decided to pick up an M8 because I'd heard so many great things about them, and I wanted to have a dedicated radio for my race vehicles, and another for my "sport" vehicles. Not to mention, I got sick of fellow racers making fun of my Precious.
The first time I ran the M8 in my XXX-T, it glitched constantly. After some research, I was able to cure the glitch problem by laying down a layer of electrical tape in the battery tray. If so much as a strand of the battery's wire touched the chassis, the thing goes nuts. I've tried changing crystals AND modules, and the problem would persist. So, anything I run this radio in MUST have the battery heavily insulated from the chassis. And to answer another inevitable question, yes, I have replaced the receiver. I'm now running an XXL, which hasn't fixed the problem.
I run primarily P2K based motors in my cars and trucks, so they've all got built in caps.
The other problem that I have with this radio is that unless you set it down very, very softly after a run, it loses power for a second, which is long enough to allow my car to jump off the table (or my boat to run it's polished and balanced prop across the rocks). I'm guessing that the weight of the batteries is pulling the tray away from the connector in the radio. I thought this was a fluke at first, but it turns out that several drivers at our track, including the owner of the track, are having the same problem. What's funny is that most guys are just living with it. We've all heard stories about Airtronics taking months to return repaired products, and don't want to be without our good race radios for that long. I have the option of running my older radio, but it's on 27 band, the "24 hour Traxxas Channel". (I'm currently trying to find a used 75 band module, don't want to pay $100 for a new one.)
I'm more or less curious if anyone else here has had the same problems, and how you resolved them (if you took the initiative).

Now you changed the the Tx, right?

If so, try using a NiCad pack which plugs in rather than the dry-cell holders. If you are going to stay with dry, bend the tabs a bit to increase pressure on the cells.

What chassis are you running? Carbon is semiconductive and causes a lot of problems. Aluminum, plastic, and glass all work better when it comes to the radio.

Andy -

Thanks for the reply. I've changed crystals, receivers, modules, tried another battery tray. I have yet to purchase the nicad pack, I've been holding out for a NiMh pack. That should solve the "cutting out".
I think I'm just going to bite the bullet and send the thing in for service. I was more or less curious to see if there were any boaters that have had similar problems, and find out how they, or Airtronics, dealt with it.
Is glitching still a problem that fast electric boaters deal with often? Or have the newer generation of radios made it a rarity?

After I destroyed Dick Crowes Bardahl, when he was in the last corner of a record run, at SpringSplash 2yrs ago. I sent my radio in, with all my receivers, to Airtronics to have everything checked and syncronized. I haven't glitched since. Evidently the radio was cutting out and my boat would go nuts. Also the receivers were corroded and what not. They sent me a list of what all they found, but I can't locate it.

Anyway, Airtronics was great, it took them about 6 weeks to fix everything and return them. The best thing was, they were fixed.

Airtronics Rocks and I love my M-8.

I haven't had a glitch in years on a boat, even with an AM radio (it finally was lost to a sinking :( ). Of course I have a small advantage in that I run only the best ESCs.

I have been using a 6" antenna on my one airplane and at 600' it starts to glitch. I have a similar antenna to try in a boat. Works great in cars but they don't draw any real current so they shouldn't glitch even with a bad ESC.

I have an M8 as well, and have to say its been a very worthwhile investment. If I were you, I'd stay away from the rechargable packs, unless you find one that houses 9 cells instead of 8...You'll be recharging them out at the lake, and thats no fun. The glitching problem may actually be directly related to the radio loosing power. Do like Andy said, and give the batteries a tad more tension. Do it by using a small screwdriver, and prying out the tension springs in the tray. Be carefull, its possible for them to be pulled out, but done carefully, that will keep the batteries from loosing contact. It has nothing to do with the main plug going from the tray to the inside of the transmitter.

I use all Airtronics recievers, I was pretty reluctant to try the Novaks or and other brand with this radio. The Blue recievers worked to well.

Good luck, I hope this helps a bit.

I am very satisfied with my M-8 also! It is very user friendly and I have had little trouble with it at all. I also use 2 radios! One for car racing and one for boat racing. Both M-8's BV
