I have just finished installing the 40/160 controller and it has two red leads and two blacks.
I am going to run 2x 6s packs in parallel. question is what is the best way to hook up the leads, I was told both reds and blacks had to be hooked to one connector each (controller)- I cannot seem to grasp how to hook two packs in parallel like this.... is it ok to use one of each lead running to separate packs with this controller? the manual was not clear on this. This is still kinda new to me... so excuse the simplistic questions.

I use either two 5.5MM or 6MM round connectors on each wire with a little bridge of solder between the two connectors and do the same thing on both red and black, Then the leads from the packs cah be connected.

The best way is to connect the packs in parallel before linking them to the ESC, like Randy describes in his mail. You could also use oversized connectors to put both wires in on both the pack and the ESC side. Just make sure the connector is big enough to hold both wires, plus capable enough to carry the amps you're drawing.

Thats a really good question....
The two leads are there to carry the current. The leads are joined at the controller end so in principle you can simply connect one pack to each lead.
Joining the connector together with a solder bridgeis fine also - it is the next best thing to soldering the wires together along their length!. same for the battery leads though you are best keeping the leads short. You do need to charge and balance your packs together, they need to be the same type, and capacity - so that the charge/discharge curves are the same - otherwise current can flow between the packs.

On the 40-160 the wires go to the same spot on the board, so there is no need to bridge the wires together, just connect each set (1 black 1 red) to each pack. On Castle controllers the wires are actually connected to separate boards on the controllers so castle tells you to bridge the wires together somewhere along their length.
Good info. I just got my first two pop tarts yesterday.
