:) I recently received some Hyperion G-3 VX 2S 35c 5500 mah cells from Jim at South River RC Boats to try in my 1/10 fast scale Vintage hydro. The layout of the hydro is limited to what cells I can run. The power comes from an AQ SV-27 motor, From the very first run on the Hyperions I could see a great increase in speeds and performance I gained 3-5 MPH. They are also getting better now that I have I have around 12 cycles and runs on them. They are just as fast from the first lap and the last lap. The data logger shows no significant signs of voltage drop during an entire 1 mile run. The price of the cells is very reasonable. I am very pleased with the Hyperion G-3 cells to this point and will most likely be getting some more cells from Jim.

That sounds like some great info! I just ordered 2 4s G3 VX5500's and 2 6s VX5500's for my P,Q, and T-class boats.. Have been running Neu 5000/30C and FP 4500/30C,, so I cant wait to test these new G3 35C cells!
What C rate are you charging them at?

I have been charging at 1c, thats all my charger will do. Waiting to get a new charger until the higher amp out put models become available. Their are supposed to be some out very soon that will go up to 10C

WOW 10C! These will make practice days at the pond much more exciting.. Being able to run about every 10-15 min,:bounce:,.. If the technology holds true, it will be VERY FUN!!!
I will start off charging at 1c for the first 10-12 cycles,, then I will try charging at 2c.. Hopefully the claims of 5c and no loss in cycle life are acurate.:burnout: If so, looks like I will be buying new chargers..
FYI: the Hyperion Duo 3 is currently able to charge up to 5C. 180W 15A Max Charge Per Port.

5C. Let's see. Currently. we charge at about 5 amps. (1c) 25 amp charges (5c).
What are you guys using for power sources? I hope they are huge. This all sounds great but our little infrastructure needs to be strengthened a bit.
A duo at 25 amps per side. 50 amps total. Holly Amp Draw Batman!!!
Should drain a car battery in about 5 minutes. Or at least flicker the lights of your house.
Patience. Slow and steady wins the race. rest those cells.

I have no plans on going above 2c on this generation of cells. But with things changing as they are, what is around the corner???

Good points.. I agree with resting the cells.. But it would sure be nice to get as much run time in a day of practice as the gasser's I race against.. More time on the water make you a much better driver and helps fine tune your set-ups..
Most of the time I take 3 boats to the pond on Sunday for practice... Usaully a 4s, 6s, and 10s boat... I have 2 sets of packs for each boat,, and come with everything charged.. That lets me run each boat twice that day and if I have time, I will recharge 1 set of packs for each boat and get 1 more run with each.. That is always plently of practice and racing in 1 day for the time I have... If these G3's can charge at 5C without any neg. effects,, I could get away with having 1 set of packs for each boat.... Almost sounds too good to be true! LOL

I have been charging the 4s 3300 mah packs at 5 amps with no problems. I have also noticed that there is no speed decrease until nearly 3300 mah has been pulled out. I have had to increase the LVC to not drain to not drain them to much.

I have been loving these cells for a while now but the FP guys don't want to hear it. I will bet they will convert soon though :moon:
There is the second part that seems to have been missed: 180W 15A Max Charge Per Port. While 5C is possible. The car killing, house dimming charging is not there for the larger packs.

You just need to buy a charger that can run of 240 V.

or get a 50amp adjustable voltage power supply, put the voltage at what you want to get your pack to ie: 4S=16.8 connect it, when the voltage of the pack equals the voltage out on the charger disconnect it!!!!!!!!!!! LMFAO!!! this is actually how you can charge A123 cells really fast!!!!!!!!

Yesterday I found a flaw with my G3 packs :(
I was running them in my 6s heli and after the flight my ESC and motor were 25*'s hotter than they ever have been. Put the eagle tree in the heli on the next flight to find that the G3's are holding voltage much much better than my old packs and causing a larger amp draw. Looks like a better ESC is the next step if I want to run the G3 packs.

They WILL increase your amp draw, so prop down and put the data logger on it for the frist runs before you burn something up!!!

I can vouch for these packs too! Brilliant, there is the Hyperion single charger that will charge up to 25 amps for around $150 i think, but you will need a 50amp+ power supply from home, the best i can charge off my car is about 10 amps, still quite good though.
BTW from all the data sheets and research i have done, i am wondering if the Hyperion and NEU packs a one in the same, wouldnt surprise me.....

From what I have read I think they might be coming from the same factory. The only difference I could find was the price tag.

I thought these G3 cells were coming from china? The Neu packs I have are Kokam cells..

TO be honest I never used a Neu pack, I am just going by what I read on other internet sites. For all I know they are completely different cells? One thing I do know for sure is I have 10- G3 packs and so far they are all awesome.
Be sure to take it easy on your new g3 packs for the first 4 or five runs.
They have relativelly high internal resistance that drops quite a bit in the first few cycles and then continues to drop right out to 100 cycles.
They are being found to actually be producing more and more power as they get more and more cycles on them.
Crazy, technology marches on :yeah:

it seems that when Enerland bought A123, they took the best from the LiFe technology, except that Lipo can take fire !
If these G3 can be stored for long times without IR going up, no doubt that we have the best investment to date in our hands!

Just got my G3 packs in today.. Whet with the 35C 5500mah in 6s and 4s.. Tested the 4s today in the DF Storm P-Mono and they were GREAT! Nice and cold,, great runtime, lots of punch, and balanced out perfect on the first charge! I cant wait to do more testing with these babies..

The cells were sold through them but now I think they may be the U.S. distibutor as well.

Hyperion G3 cells
I have 4S5500/35c
8 medium draw runs of 3.4v cutoff since new.
today hit 3.4 .hit it hard .. .. took 5160 to charge the 5500 pack
that means 93% depletion
any ideas why ?
Is this usual performance for these packs ?
Or do these need a higher cutoff proportional to A drain ?

These pack do hold voltage longer then most other it seems. I have not hit the voltage cut off on my packs , But I only use mine for racing I draw 2000 mah on a 1 mile run.

From what I've read A123 is privately held here in the US! They were just awarded huge amounts of grant funding to devolop, build and maintain their product in the states!
It was made part of the conditions to recieve the funding --- I believe the factory will be in Michigan --- near the auto industry to help defray shipping costs to the car companies as well as help the displaced auto workers!
That's not to say that Enerland didn't invest in the company early on but no they don't own them!.
The total amount of Federal award ... $249 million dollars!

Notice that some of the other brands such as Thunder Power are now selling these cells. Seems that the manufacturer of these cells has a major advance in Lipos.
Hehe, I bought several of the old style Hyperion packs from Aircraft World for absolutely rediculous prices.2-2S 5000mAh LVX packs for 1/2 the regular price. Also bought some 4350's in 2S and 3S configurations. Even though they are not the G3 series, they are still a good buy and I couldn't pass up a deal like that. The 2S 5000mAh packs will be used in my BBY OS 26 in a 4S series.
I've bought only one G3 2S 850 mAh pack (yeah, a real monster) for my new heli (Walkera UFLY). Another one of these and I'll be able to fly for hours.LOL.
I do plan to buy some G3packs for the O.S. 26 but not right away.
cheers

I'm waiting until the last minute before the racing season to decide on batteries. Currently I run G3's but who knows what may be available in the next four months.

who knows what new battery technology will show up between now and then? However I think it's safe to say the G3 will be at the head of the pack(pun intended) for a while.
