View Full Version : 10th Scale Club Roster

This thread is for the members who wish to build 10th scale boats within the clubs racing schedule if passed. If it is not official class, I believe the CORE has discussed that as a class that they would allow us to run if we have a 3 boats minimum show.

So with that said,

Rules: NAMBA 10th Scales rules apply. These rules will be posted in the Scale Hydro forum @ Rumrunnerracing. If you are going to be game enough in the future to race at another Clubs Event, I would suggest building the boat to incorporate the entire DRIVE DOG and a portion of the prop being forward of the transom (IMPBA Rule)

Class Designation 2010: Vintage boats only. ie: Shovel Nose, Round nose

Racing: 6 laps, left turn only.

Scoring: Minimum race is three boats which constitutes a legal race for points. pt scoring same as LSH; 400 1st, 300 2nd, etc.

Registration: Members are to provide a registration of the boat they are building. This will provide an avenue so no duplication of a vintage hydroplane will exist within the boats real sponsorship, U #'s and years the boat ran in actual competition. In other words if I build the GaleIV, III, V, VI, & VII are open, just not the IV version. If someone were to build the Wildroot Charlie with a U#54, this is still a legal boat, even though the Gale IV was a U-54. Boats must be of an actual past real hydroplane, no fictitious sponsors or U #.

If anyone wants a copy of the hydroplane boats with name, U #'s and years in competition let me know and I will send you a copy of my Excel file.

Boats in Progress:

Ron Squires------ Miss Wahoo U-77 (1956, 1957)
Chuck Crawford-- Gale V (III) U-55 (1958, 1959, 1960, 1961, 1962, 1963, 1964)
Tom Mihelich----- Nitrogen U-79 (1958, 1959, 1960)
Tony Liberatore-- Miss Thriftway U-60 (1958,1959,1960,1963)
Tom Costello----- My Sweetie G-3 / U-3 (1948, 1949, 1950, 1951)
John Gross------- Short Circuit U-99 (1957, 1958)
Jay Stolz-------- TBA

I hope this class is a winner, but Q Sport started off slow and now has gained momentum in only two years. I hope this class will come to be the same. It will take a commitment and buildsmanship. But, It will be a fun class to not only run, but for visitors and spectators to view.

I don't want this to look as if I'm pushing this on the club, but Q Sport started off slowly a few back, and this might also spur on some new blood as well. We'll see how it goes.

Chuck,
I have a boat change request as the Vernors boat is not of the same type of hull I am working on.
Please revise the roster to : 1958 Nitrogen U-79.
This is the more traditional round shovel nose hydroplane.

Thanks.

Tony, We'll do anything to help, BUT, you got to think of another boat. The plans we have are a Ted Jones Hull, Your on another builders boat for the one you choose. Tom's in the same problem. Bare in mind, ya just don't put a name and number on it. It's a scale, (Exactly the same) just in 1/10th. Call me, I'm going weds morning to get wood, I'll get enough to do the pieces for ya,

I have posted the 10th Scale Rules in the "Scale Hydro Board" that were forwarded to me from Marty Schallenberger, the NAMBA National Scale Director. The Master Hull Roster is also available on the NAMBA web-site which gives you the hull #, years the boat participated U # and Dimensional info. On the Dimensional aspect, The Tolerance dimension is +/- 1.00" on overall length, All other dimension are +/- 10%. same as 8th scale....

Have a great sawdust day.... :hammer:

Hello All,

I've been "lurking" here for some time and it seems the 1/10 scale movement has bitten me. It's been many years since I put together a boat, but I'd like to jump in and join the fun if possible.

After some research I've settled on U-4, Tempest 1956 as my target build.

I'm a sucker for varnished mahogany...

If I'm in town, I will try to turn up for the January meeting - I'm sure I will have many questions by then!

Mike, I really hope it's bitten you good. 10th scale is a really neat class to run. We hosted the 09 Nat's this year and these monsters came in from Colorado with three to race and the bug caught up with us. They run just like the real ones do and when you see them corner, You wish you were about 8" tall, they look so real running and cornering, you would swear they are. Hope you can make the meeting and yes bring on the questions.

Guys,

Thanks for the offers of help and directions to the meeting. I need to finish off another project I have on at the moment, but I should be ready to start shortly. In the meantime I've got a couple of questions regarding rules and scale:

The U-4 Tempest hull was a bit shorter than the Ted Jones version, which will require some modification of plans (no matter where I start). I figured I could start with either the Finlay or Newton plans. Newton plans would require scaling and adjustment of the sponson attack and dihedral angles as I understand it. The Finlay plans would need adjustment to get all the dimensions within the NAMBA rules.

In reading the rules, the overall length measurement reads to me that it would include the part of the vertical fin which extends beyond the transom, but this doesn't seem to make sense.

In addition, I can't work out how the Finlay plans are within the 1/10 rules to begin with, if the original hull was really 28.5 feet. The reference measurements on the plans are without the fin.

So, are vertical fins part of the "length" measurement to NAMBA rules? What exactly is the "height" dimension as defined by NAMBA?

Any thoughts would be most appreciated!

Best,

Mike

Mike, The hull is the dimensioned part. The fin is not in the overall length, just from the frt tip to the transom. Hope you can make the meeting, we can help you out.

I am contemplating building a reproduction of the Miss USA that Palazollo's built in the 1960's. The boat is rather ugly but intreging because it has no contoured surfaces. The original boat was built from sheet aluminum. Ken thinks there will be all kinds of problems getting the boat up on plane. The only shape was the top of the engine compartment and the drivers compartment. I know with my budget it will not be completed this season but it should be an easy build. On another note I started planning a build for a great lakes bulk carrier and Norm was kind enough to give me H2O cat hull that I need to complete for this season. I am looking for any NiCad batteries, speed controls, chargers, etc. If you have any you want to get rid of let me know.

Alright you Vintage 10th Scalers.

Looks like we have somewhere between 10 to 11 vintage builds in process. Not knowing where everybody stands build wise. We need 3 minimum to have a heat race.

Since my move to Grand Blanc, I have nuttin done or repaired. May will be another story..

How is your builds coming along?????

If we don't have three to race, My suggestion is at least bring what you have for show and tell kinda thing. If we field 3 then those drivers will compete for the Apple Cup otherwise we go on to May at the MCXI and the Washington Presidential Cup and club points. The boys are ready to make wagers on if, when, or what on the 10th scalers

We got one week to go and I will not be ready, but I will be there to help support and CD.

Where does everyone stand !!

Wow easy points if you can get 3 going for Sunday. The early completers will have a big jump on points for the 1/10 Scale points series.

Just a suggestion for unfinished 1/10 boats that are RTR do a points deduction(say 50 pts per each heat entered). This will encourage 1/10 racers to run and finish their boats. Why am i so interested? I volunteered to CD this class!
