Guys,
I have a 22.5 lb polyester layup 45" Insane mono. I have been running it with a 2230 1y, 240 amp Castle and a x430 prop. Batteries are 5s2p 10,000 mah in series 25c. I can't stop the boat form running wet. Therefore top speed of 56 mph. I have aligned the strut to 0 degrees, I didn't realize she was negative 2 degrees.
My real question is can I finish an open mono race with new technology Thunder power packs. 5s2p 5000 mah pro power 30c's in series.
I already bought them so I hope the answer is yes.
The boat has lost about 3-4 lbs with the smaller batteries, trim tabs at 0 degrees, strut at 0 degrees, and CG around 30% .
Any and all enlightenment will be appreciated.

Been there done that.
Steve Reesor, Howard Tucker and myself have competed in the open mono classes for the past 3 years. Others have done this too but I am more informed on our setups. There are certain issues one must overcome to make a hull worthy to compete in this class.
For one thing Howard and I were using gas monos. Hurricanes to be exact. They really weren't designed to run as fast as we were making them go. Upper 50's to low 60's using 3080 and 3060 size lehrners on 10S2P. I switched to a Laser 45 and Howard modified his Hurricane. Steve has been running a Chinese hull. Steves consistantly ran well. I believe his had 4 strakes oppposed to my 2 witch gave the hull the ablility to air out easier. I switched from the Laser 45 to a XXX since the bottom was the same but alot lighter but the same 2 strakes.
Ideally you want to run closer to 15# or less. But that is difficult with the amount of cells we carry. I ran as small as 3700's and they worked but at the short life cost of the batts. Sponsorship was good to me then. It gave me the chance to try them. I had to go to 4200's but they xtra weight was a drag...literally.
The one good thing about the open mono class is that you usually have some big gassers throwing large props and churning up the pond quite roughly. This allowed me to run my XXX in the low 60's and keep the cells on a light enough load to keep them in their range of safe operating. Once the water became calm the cells would be overtasked and loose low resistance.
I'm not sure if the insane has 2 or 4 strakes but do know they make one heck of a heavy hull. They ride well when properly powered by gas but they may be too heavy for FE. I have also seen Doug Jr run a chinese hull with a small outrunner on 10S1P but he was limited to a small prop and honestly if I was running with his hull he would probably had a tough time dealing with my wake.
So that is roughly my experience with big fe monos. I would not give up that the hull won't work. Just remember to for testing to keep the laps down and constantly check the cells. If she runs a little wet in solo testing she should be good for rough water racing.
BTW I am assuming you typo'd but a x430 wont get you up on plane.

I have a lot of experiance with the Insane monos as you know Jeff. On mine I run the cg between 12 and 13" from the transom. You then have to put possitive strut angle. It will take more than you would expect but you have to keep on going untill she rides loose. This will help hold up the front of the boat and help in the turns as well. Mine runs on the last 4" of the boat. You have to make the boat run loose then you tame it down with the trim tabs. I start with the tabs bent up quite a ways. I run a 6516 3 blade prop that been tweeked for a mono. An octura 465 or 467 work pretty good as well. Dont run anything smaller than a 465 prop. My boat runs 60 to 70 mph depending on what prop I run. I can go 10 laps and put back between 6000 to 6500 mah back in the pack. Those TP 30c will wake up the boat as well.

Mark,
I will follow your advice with the setup up. As I built the boat with your assistance. My real question is can she run with 10s2p 5000 mah pro power 30c batteries and last 6 laps on a 1/6 mile oval course, without hurting the batteries or anything else for that matter.

Jeff,
I run 10s 2p 10,000 mah using the 5000 mah packs. I would not run anything less than 7800 mah using the 3850 packs. You should get 7 or 8 laps easy with 7800 setup.

Mark,
I still have two 10,000 mah 10s2p bricks you had made up for me. A castle HV240 shorted during a race and blew the battery packs apart. I will stay with them for the season. So if I understand this correctly, I would need to run two 5000 mah packs in parallel, then in series to come up with the same configuration. Correct?

Yes that is correct.

Mark,
Thank you for the assistance once again. I would not be into FE boat racing if it were'nt for you. It is definetly more exciting than flying a big Heli inverted, or a ducted fanjet at 120 mph by yourself.
I joined a local club here in new Jersey, and I rub elbows with some of the nicest guys. And some of the best racers in the country. I look forward to more of an education this year from guys like you, and my fellow club members.
Be well,
Jeff

Thanks Jeff, to get the boat to run right you have to play with the cg and strut angle. If your out alone you can move the cg back to get the boat to loosen up and run right. If your going to race or be out there with other boaters then you have to move the cg up or sometimes you can just adjust the trim tabs down a little to settle the boat down. Personally I try to leave the cg back and play with the trim tabs but its always different it seems when ever you travel to different places. Once you get a feel for the boat then it will come easier to you to figure out what you need.

Just for fun, here's some open mono action from WW IV in AZ, March '08. Bill's Sniper & Howard running the Herzog. This was an alternate pond & these boats really churned it up.

Me damn it! :moon: Howard. Huricane with a 3040 lehner in it on 10s2p 7400mah and a 457 or 455 3 blade.
Really Really small pond. Watch Bill hit the shore a few times.

Here are a couple pictures (if I can get this thing to work)of my Gen 1 45" Insane Mono that used to have my CMB90 in it.
It is powered now by 2 T-600 1400KV outrunners on 2 packs of 5000mah 6S packs in parallel supplying both esc's.
speed with X-447 De tongued and sharpened props is right at 59mph with radar gun.
the balance is at 13 1/8" measured from the transom.
I am out in VA and race in Dist. 12 IMPBA
used to belong to SMB when we were stationed at Luke AFB. Carl
