Has anyone ever use haircell ABS to form a hull. I was thinking that you could form with the haircell on the inside. Might make a nice surface to glue things too. What do ya think?

I couldn't find a picture anywhere. That's why I asked about it. I finally went to a supply house and checked it out. It's just a grainy surface. Reminded me of an old plastic suitecase I used to have when I was a kid. I'm sure it has it's applications but I couldn't see it working for me.

Terry, a guy in my club found this stuff it's called cintex or centex, (i'll find out exactly) it is far lighter then balsa, but it is as strong as plywood, I was waiting to get a sheet before I build some new projects, I think the glider guys might have used it, anyway the guy made a boat by the glue and stitch methaod similar to the maxam fast electric (made from a pizzabox rcmb) anyway the stuff glues beutifully with ca, without accelerator, cuts like a dream, all the surfaces are waterproof, I thought it would be ideal for formers, anyway if your interested once i find out exactly what it is I'll post it, apparently a lot of sign shops use it, it's not cheap, 80 bucks for a 4 x 8 sheet, but that is a few years of boats, I thought about this for the yellow jacket, use this for formers, then skin with thin balsa and then skin the balsa with very thin abs, strong and very lightweight,,, just a thought

Ed,
I'm going to try to pick up a sample of Kydex. It's a PVC/Acrylic blend. It has twice the impact resistance of utility grade ABS so I though maybe thinner sheet. Less weight but still stronger.

Terry,
Tracy used this for a while for me. It bonds worse than the smooth surface - go with smooth.
It was a good bit cheaper, as I recall.

Andy,
What thickness did you use for the UL? Also, is there and E-mail address for the guys you used for your forming? I'm feeling optimistic today. LOL

Terry,
Send me an e-mail for Tracy Osterhout's e-mail address. He did the original work and you would want to talk to him first.
The other molder was Bubba Spivey from Lanier RC. He makes a living doing this, and quality is tops.
My production stuff was molded from Lanier's .050 ABS.

Laird plastic sells a version of that called Kydex. It's a Pvc/Acrylic blend that is heavier than ABS but has more than twice the impact resistance. If you could get it formed I would suppose you could use a thiner sheet without loosing too much strength.
