i noticed steps on the hulls of some full size racing boats and was wondering if i should incorporate them in my v bottom hull i'm designing, if so what do they contribute to the boat.
thanks

The steps are for freeing your hull from the water. they cause a separation of the hull and the water at the steps making bubbles in a sense, therefore less water is touching the hull slowing it down or causing drag. You cant run these types of hulls in all classes so check before you build for a specific type of race class. For instance, n1 mono wont work, but offshore is okay.
hope this helps.

it would make a nice difference. it just gets a layer of air between the boat and water = less drag

The bad side...make cornering harder.
