View Full Version : Motors 101, an elementary question...

I know that an "05" can motor is so named because it roughly matches the output of it's gas counterpart. (Correct me if I'm wrong.)

Then there are 500's, 600's, 700's and 800's etc.

Can someone tell me what those number mean?

And specifically....is a Mabuchi 540 roughly the same as a Graup 500 series? (I think I heard that Graups actually are made by Mabuchi...true? Is a 540 and a 500 the same motor?)

And if anyone can point me to an elementary motor primer, either web-based or in print, it would be much appreciated.

I do have Bob Boucher's book, but I guess I don't have the masters degree required to translate it. :( It would be great to have a "RC Motors for Dummies" version.

I think you are correct on the 500/540.. I do know that the 550 size motor is what Graupner/Hobby Lobby calls the 600 so I would think the other would be true as well.

I have also heard these are all mabuchi motors..there is one other and that is sagami and I heard those were faster...espeically for the 600BBSP 7.2 volt motor...which is the fastest of the 550/600 size motor. A bit over 3000 rpm/v.

Good motors and strong in duration but go for the 600BB Sp 7.2 volt if you are looking for any performance and then run it on 7 cells or even 8 cells with smaller prop.

I was going to try the same motor and then came a plett that I wanted.

Except for the comment that 05's put out roughly what an .049 would give, you are right.

In airplanes, most conversions of .049 planes are flying on Speed 400's and retaining performance.

Maybe there's an old stock 05 (540 can) that had similar power.

Maybe I should rephrase part of the question...

Are motors named 500, 600, 700 etc. because those numbers roughly measure some particular aspect of output, size, amp draw, or dimension?

I'm not looking for a motor for a particular application (yet), I just wanted to understand available motors a little better.

I don't think the 500,600 or 700 was ever sized to be anywhere close to any nitro engine or compared to.

Astroflight has a bit of this on their site you can read about.

Most guys here can tell you which motor work best for hull combo and

I know that my 700 performance does not compare to the .21 but it may be close to the .15-18 nitro in speed, etc. This is only based on me running my .18...with a lighter weight than the 700 with 12 cell and my 12 cell can still beat it.

I understand the 05 refers to .05hp or 38w which was the original spec output of the motor
