Just to let everyone know our club has gotten it's own domain name and is in the process of building our own site. Check it out at www.classicthunder.org

Jim,

I like your site, very clean and functional without sacrificing looks.

The 10 Commandments are great.

Could you answer a few questions about those tips?

1. Regarding Tip #3: What do you mean by the "rear window"?

2. Tip #2: "The true sponson depth should be 1 inch." You use the word "true" as if it has special significance. Does it? How is "true sponson depth" measured?

3. Commandment 4 says "The depth of the bottom of the prop shaft at the transom should be equal to the true sponson depth." Does that mean 1", or does it mean you should be able run a level, horizontal line from the bottom of the sponson to the bottom of the prop shaft at the transom."

And one more question....

I assume most of you guys build from Newton plans, (but correct me if I'm wrong on that).

What method do you use to scale the plans down?

Doug I am not avoiding you It is just that I have only been into this club and RC for about a year and a half (this will be my 2nd full season) and I have trouble explaining or even understanding what tip #2 and #3 mean.

Here are the answers to all of your questions

Not so I have done that as I am not experienced but there are now three fiberglass hull's in the club, also there are two members in the club who also build boats for others that use Foam extensively and in one case exclusively and then cover it with plywood. Both of them combined have made probably 50% of the boats raced in the club. Some others draw their own plans and the rest like me use Rogers Plans.

Rear window is measured by placing the boat on a flat surface and rocking it forward till the sponsons are laying flat, the rear window is the measurement from the tabletop to the bottom of the boat at the transom.

True sponson depth is the measurement from the ride surface (at the back) of the sponson up to the afterplane of the bottom of the boat (that is the flat section of the bottom of the boat at the back before it starts to curve up twords the nose). You can't just measure up to the bottom of the boat because the bottom has usually started to curve up by the time it gets to the back of the sponson, and this would give you a false depth. You have to lay a flatedge on the afterplane and draw a line forward on the inside face of the sponson, and measure to that line. This will give you the "True Sponson Depth".

Remember the ten commandments are just TIPS, and are not rules that have to be followed.

I just take mine to a local Kinko's that has a huge copy machine. You have to check the dimensions though as a lot of copy machines are not accurate both length and width.

Yes they have.
any single motor no gearbox
any batteries 14 cells
skidfin I think can extend 1.5 inches (aprox 38mm) below sponson not sure what the width is limited to
boats from the 70's up to present
part of the prop must be under the transom
can be flex or solid shaft
1/10 scale
I think thats all

Jim,

I wish I could live out there - those Div II boats would be very appealing to me. Are they going to run backwards around the course too, or will they be running clockwise like NAMBA and IMPBA and APBA models?

You said "Seattle" and that brought me back to my senses. Never mind, I'll stay here ;) I don't like rain.

They already have one in San Jose. Maybe my trip to the October Heats could be business-related!
