I am designing a new super light 28 cell SAW rigger (my first wooden) and wonder if it is strength enough in styrofoam (and only styrofoam) to make sponsons of them for SAW racing?

24-cell SAW boats are running in the 80s (mph), and I am afraid that if you blew off the water then the all-foam sponsons would be destroyed and the boat could sink. I don't believe that an extra ounce or two of weight makes any difference on a 24-cell boat - it is far better to use those 2 ounces for strength and reliability.
I would suggest that you sheet the inside and the bottom with 1/16th inch plywood as a minimum. And, take a spare set of sponsons with you. :)

Yeppers, Jay's right.... A boat of that cell count would destroy foam sponsons.. Sheet 'em!!!
