Anyone have a good used Speed Controller. Have a Electro Vee built by Fine Designs. He recommended the Astro Flight 212D for $89.00 but was looking for something a little cheaper. I have 12 cells.

The ESC you use is one area you DO NOT want to be cheap on. The 212 from Chris is a good controller I have one in my Plett. Powered American Dream. The best choice would be any from RC-Hydro's www.rc-hydros.com

These are wiothout question the most reliable controls you will ever buy and short of it going to the bottom of a very deep lake never to be seen again you will never have to replace it. It will just work and work and work. think of it as the pink bunny of brushed ESC's.

Now if I could just get this image of Andy in a pink bunny suit out of my mind....

Jason,
Mike is on the money... if you were to buy a substandard (for FE) controller, you'd have to replace it soon anyway... now, we have found it to be cheaper to just get the right controller in the first place...
As an aside there will be an RC-Hydros 6-14 cell water cooled ESC going up for auction during the week...

The ESC is new and still in it's packing...

I'd highly reccomend you getting one... Plus, if you win it... it isn't that far for me to ship it to you... heck, I could even drive back to my hometown for cheaper than the price of shipping...LOL

If you need any help, our club is always available to help out... and we're only 2 hours away...

Laters,
Bryan

what range do you think it will be going for ? You can send your reply to jason@yellow7.com if you want to keep it on the down low.

When it makes it up for auction....

It will be going up for $75 as an opening bid... Andy's ESCs are top notch and the customer support is unparralleled.... I have one that is goin in my son's hydro and it's NEVER failed...

All you have to do is watch for the item to come up for bid... it may get drawn to go up tonight... you never know...LOL (basically depends on if I grab the right chip)

Laters,
Bryan

Think of Andy in a tux then. You'll see why in the next RCBM.

You better - you made it!

Now I have to make me a new avatar with "cool" glasses and the tux picture.

Hello Yellow,

I have a brand new Jeti Navy 600 8 to 30 cells, water cooled and water proof for 50.00. You can check them out at hobby-lobby.com where they list for around 100.00.

Let me know.

Paul.

The guy's are steering you in a good direction, I do love my SC3's and I've had about 6 212d's and 3 of the jetti's and now a Tekin they are all good controllers I just don't wanna see you go off reading stats because if you do you will buy some 400 amp car controller and you will not find happiness there PLEASE please get one of the ones that we recomend we have gone threw all the testing and (smoke)

Hell I just went to take a look in my box to see what I have (I really didn't have a clue) there are 3 SC3's and a Tekin and I only own one brushed motor Ha!! Ha!!

Yes some car cantrollers are claiming 400 amps now

That 400 amp rating is an instantaneous spike only, It would sure set itself ablaze if the draw was that high for a couple seconds.

Yep, I've seen 800, even 1000+, as their "peak" current handling, the problem is, they almost NEVER state the duration of that peak, it's practically a joke to even put it on the shiny box. For a given nanosecond, even the "cheapo" controllers can take an ultra-high spike of seemingly phenomenal proportion.

Think of this as a fuse- a fuse pops ULTIMATELY from the heat it generates within itself. There are theoretical limits of how many amperes you can get through a given pipe (electrical connection or circuit), but the fuse itself, you can go many times over its rating, as long as the duration is short enough, without the fuse going "pop".. Ever look at a "slow-blow" fuse? They're designed not to heat as fast, and ignore such spikes more readily than "fast acting" fuses do.

It's also similar to what us FE'ers do to motors... Heat one up, but not too much, you can draw x amount of current for x amount of time, more current, motor will burn up, more current and less time, and you're OK.

It really annoys me that they (manufacturers) put out specs like that, they're no indication of real-world performance or reliability of a speed control. Such situations are generally created in the lab, with insanely high amp draws for equally insanely short durations...

Some might argue, "Well, it gives an indicator to the performance, yeah it won't ever see that value, but it gives you a gauge"... Alternatively, they might not even be "tested" at that rating, but derive it with a set of calculations instead. True, electronics is all about calculations, but "real world", testing is the only way to PROVE a design. I think those extreme ratings are a load of bull. NOW, tell me how many SUSTAINED amperes it can take for, say, a constant 24 hours, now that's a figure I'm interested in!

This's what happens when the marketing department gets the engineer's ear long enough to hear numbers that will sell (though not understanding what they mean). Or worse, an engineer who IS the marketing department trying to make it with his product.

Rant Complete... hahahaha

Take Care,
Paul

BTW- buy RC-Hydros Speed Controllers, they're RACE PROVEN!!!

Peak is usually (or supposed to be) a "long" time of about 10 seconds.

Surge (what I use) is for the first few mS while the arm is starting up.

Before I saw the RC-Hydros light, I Went through 2 Castle's and 3 Tekin controllers at the 2000 SAW. I was able to use a LRP that had a nano second surge rating of 400 amps, for about 20 runs before the smoke & fire (yes, not just smoke but fire!!!) came billowing out. Even when I thought I killed one of Andy controllers and sent it back, it turned out to be a short in the motor. I still try and kill those darn things every chance I get, but they keep fighting back.

I do have one more torture test for them, it's going in my drag boat!!! Mu ha ha!!!

You know, Eddie, I did loose the cowel for about 6 week in there. I finally found it when I emptied the shop to get ready for October Heats! :-)

Since we have the C-Hydro now, I had to do some serious shop cleaning! I still can't see the bottom of the work bench, but I'm getting closer! The drag boat is now on a box in the front of the bench! I just need the motor for 3 days in a couple of weeks. ;-)

I keep having this reoccurring dream of Andy showing up in his tux and Ferrari at the next NAT's - of course in this dream Andy has developed the perfect BL-ESC and went public with this company.
