On the german forums, people seem to time these motors just using a needle-nose pliers and (lotsa?) force. Is there a better/more elegant way of doing it, short of buying the $15 tool Hobby Lobby sells. And then the tool seems to be only for 400 motors.....any suggestions/experience out there?

I used to time Speed 400 motors for airplanes using snap ring pliers. It worked ok, but sometimes I would bend or break the replacable ends on the pliers. And occasionally I would run across a S400 that had such a tightly crimped end bell that I couldn't move it this way.
I ended up buying the tool from New Creations R/C and it works great. I haven't found an S400 I could not adjust using it. If you're going to time a few motors, spring for the tool. It's worth it IMO.
I have no experience retiming 480's.
