Hugh,

One thing that I would suggest if you are starting in on a Dumas boat of any sort is that you carefully weigh the pieces and compare the total weight to the scale weight of the original boat. Dumas uses "robust" wood in their kits and "strong" fibreglass hull structures, but the result can be a boat that will be a bit (25%) heavy. Because Dumas often engineers their boats for both electric and IC motors, the robustness is not optional with the IC motor. Substitution of lighter materials, like LitePly or even balsa is perfectly possible, if you intend to use electric power.

If you do lighten, use thin ca on balsa which makes it stronger and more ridged and over all lighter. Just let thin ca run down the balsa pieces and soak in and then if u want , use 1/64 ply on one side and will increase the strenght! I used to make riggers a few years ago and used 1/16" balsa and 1/64 ply for the tub and sure took a beating and came out on top everytime. Have a good day!

With my Donzi, I used all of the suplied wood. Its powered by t big cordites and turbo trannys, with 3 6v(almost 7 lbs together) batteries, it can still use a bit more weight to put it right at the waterline. Ill see what happens when I put the tower, outriggers, bow railings, and a few other things. should put her right about where she needs to be.

All in all she tips the scale at over 22 lbs, shes heavy but let me tell you, she MOVES

Tom which cordites??? the pletts? or the 700's I was planning on using the 700 12volts in fine design trannies for my 48" sterling chris craft??? I am planning on using the 0955 l and rights these are some righteous scale props with lots of push,,, I have used them with 600's and 3 to 1 drives on a 40 inch and it moved nicely... have a look...sorry for the bad pic....
http://www.rumrunnerracing.com/feforums/attachment.php?s=&postid=3722, and that is not even flat out yet, 8 cells only she'll really scoot when kicked up to 12

Eddie,

Im not too sure what motors they are, I dont think they are Pletts. Next to my SS1, they are MONSTEROUS about 2 1/4" dia. I think that they might be 8200s or thats what they said on the tubes they were packed in. Call Chris, he knows what they are. He should know the boat, last time I called him, he knew what boats I had as soon as I mentioned my name.

My name
Tom Daly
