Here is what I did with mine, using a combination of aluminum and plastic, over hangs the sides and back, just a bit.. The aluminum and the plastic are the same thickness..

Barry Janzen and Doug Twaits Jr have very similar setups. Barry used 3mm styrene and Douggie used 3.2mm wood.

From what I understand, the ride pads extend about 3-4mm off the transoms. They are about 1.5mm wider than the molded pad. The pad extends right up to the step.

The pad is sanded so that it is a straight line from the step (where it blends in smoothly) to the trailing edge. This adds a very small amount of angle of attack to the sponson.

I have no ride pads on the two boats I have - they are both stock.

Hope this helps.

It's extremely worth it. Sheath the bottom and front of the sponsons with 40 thou plastic cut to the shape of the ride areas with an overhang of 0.5mm either side and at the rear. Make sure the edges are sharp. That's 4 pads.

There's a slight step in the sponsons. Do you mean install a ride pad in front of that step as well as behind? If so, I assume you also maintain the step.

Doesn't seem like that area in front of the step would make much contact with water.

Yes, I sheath the fron step as well - it helps to get the boat out of the water and I think on turns etc when the sponson may drop, There is hardly any weight penalty.

If you don't want to do this sharpen the edges using one of the other methods around - e.g. tape and superglue, Ther is a German epxoy (name escapes me at present but it has a powder accelerator) that works well also.

My UL125 is quite quick with a basic BB700 8.4 and obviously capable of more.
