Guys,

I have some vid cam questions. I'm totally ignorant. Is there a huge difference in video quality between DV, Digital8, and Hi8? Enough for the average family to notice?

These things don't take great stills do they?

I have one and they take noticablly better video. Most have some problems in low light situations and you are correct that they don't do well with still's. Don't buy one for the stills.

Jim,

Have one which? The DV, digital 8 or the Hi8? Or is that all the same thing?

Sorry about that it would help if I read your post correctly. The DV and Digital 8 would be similar in quality and both would be better than HI 8. The digital 8 is just sony that makes them and I ended up buying one of the mini DV's as they tend to have better optical zoom lenses on them.

There's a $100 price jump from the top of the line Sony Digital 8 and the bottom of the line Sony DV. When I started thinking about these I had no idea there were a go zillion choices.

The Mini DV's offer a lot more models than the Digital 8 does there are way more manufacturers making the mini DV models. Check out the link below for good reviews on most models.
