View Full Version : 05 motors-- Doubles, Triples??

I am going to play with a few 05 motors and would like to know what most use with these...doubles or triples.
I do know that hulls that run very light such as riggers, etc can get away with triples but for most 05 motor usage I would like to to know what I should do.
I am considering around 15T motors but don't know what to do.
I only know that triples have less torque but what if the motor goes up to 17 and a triple...is that better than a 15 or 14 double?
Currently I will run one in a Force 22 mono and 6-7cells.

IMO there is no practical difference in motor performance between doubles and triples if they are wound the same way. On a dyno you may see a difference, but in a boat I've never been able to tell. How well the motor is wound makes a lot more difference than the number of strands per turn.

Hi Jeff, I've had 4 motors in my Force 22,,, and I've found all but one to run too hot, with either a X435 or X431 prop,,, first an old 24t speedworks oval stocker, then a 17t Double Monsters of Touring, next a 19T Chameleon (very fast),,, and finally, My Choice, a 15T Reedy Bad Max (Monster truck motor) the fastest yet, to the point of being hard to control, without overheating!,,,
but just a note, this is without water cooling.
Yes, double & triple winds have less low end torque & are slower to spool up, but I think they produce more rpm & torque at the top end, as long as you let them unwind.

Thanks to both of you. I heard the Reddy Maxx was pretty good motor....I would suspect better torque because of the longer can.
Mik...about how far is your motor mounted from the Transom and do you use a flat pack or saddle to run in the F22?
Any other insider info regarding that hull...any bad habits I can work on during build time? Anything else I should do to it?
Thanks, Jay...I think I hear you saying quality built motors are the only way to go. I agree with that.

The motor is mounted in its original stock position, just under the front edge of the hatch, on an aluminum mount,,, with a solid alum. coupling, leading to a .098 flex cable with an alum. stuffing tube, & teflon liner,,, connected to the warehouse hobbies running gear & rudder. A tip here is to make sure the front of the rudder is even with the front of the prop (or it won't respond to the rudder well),,, a wooden shelf was installed across the rear to hold the steering servo,,, A saddle pack is used alongside the stuffing tube, velcro to the bottom,,,

Sorry Erik, it seems they discontinued it, don't know why ???,,, I think only a 19t Reedy Badd Maxx is available now,,, and the sad part is you can't get an armature, end bell, or any other parts for them !!!,,, In fact mine has adjustable timing, I don't know if thats available on the newer Badd Maxx motors,,, I guess Reedy figures they are not that Important!,,, and, they appear to be cheaply made without any bearings, or choice of brushes or springs. I would guess a Trinity 17t Monster Maxx "Pro" motor is better made, & probably just as powerful, in its place,,,
So now I have a discontinued boat (Kyosho Jet Arrow) & motor (Reedy 15t Badd Maxx),,, guess I'll be extinct soon too!,,, LOL,,,

Thanks, Erik. I may go that route. I actually don't like messing with brushes...when I need real speed I can drop the plett in it I guess.
I understand th Chamellion is a good motor. Several have said that and is vey strong with bearing at both ends and pretty hot timing.
