So what's ya'll's favorite place to get wood? I'm looking at building the 12 cell oberto soon. I need 1/32ply and 3/32 balsa...plus a few others. Any suggestions? I almost don't feel like building my current plastic boat, because I'm ready to get started with the wood. It also kinda seems like a plastic boat done right(filling all the gaps, smoothing the lip, and sharpening the edges) takes as much effort as a wood boat would. What do ya'll use to cut with? In the plans it said use sissors to cut the 1/32, but can you do that with 3/32? Thanks.

Gene

PS. How much wood could a wood-chuck cut if a wood-chuck could cut wood? :)

No, 3/32" ply is too thick to cut with scissors. I use a jigsaw.

I get 90% of my wood from www.nationalbalsa.com although other places include www.superiorbalsa.com and www.balsausa.com

I get the best contest balsa from www.sigmfg.com via my LHS.

All these folks carry more than just balsa. Naional, for instance, sells all kinds of hardwood veneers. I bought a bunch of 1/32" x 4 x 48" mahogany for the same price that Midwest sells 2x24 sheets!

Hope this helps.

Two of my favorite online souces are:

http://www.lonestar-models.com/

http://www.superiorbalsa.com/

There are many more, maybe others can jump in here and tell where they buy their wood.

As far as cutting balsa is concerned, nothing can beat an exacto knife and a SHARP #11 blade. A good razor saw is also very handy. About the only thing you can cut with scissors is 1/64" plywood.
If your involvement with wood advances, you might consider a bench-type jig/scroll saw .... and then for the really well-equipped shop there's the bandsaw.

Thanks ya'll. I see three votes for superiorbalsa. I'll check out the others too. Thanks for the cutting tips too. I don't have the band saw, but my brother does. I might have to go give him a little visit. :) Thanks again.
