View Full Version : Recommendations for 1st LSH Wood Kit?
I am thinking about building a 12 cell, hydroplane kit to run in the LSH category. Does anyone have a recommended kit for a first time wood boat builder? I am looking for a kit with the pre-cut wood and a supplied cowl and pretty good instructions. Any suggestions?
Thanks RvE

Depending on what you are looking for, soon ... we will have available from Rum Runner Hobbies several wood kits which may fit the bill.
At 24 inches we have the scale classic hydro, Slo Mo Shu. This is an Andy Kunz designed Shovel Noose hydro. Its really pretty neat. This is the boat I am running this season. The kit is laser cut and actually pretty good. Come with plans, building instructions ans decals.
Also - we will have ready for shipping by April another LSH kit. Its of a replica of the 1993 Turbine TIDE. This boat is also pretty cool. Its 24 inches long and should be a hot boat to beat in the LSH class. Its actually very light for its size, if you build it per plans. It can be reinforced which is likely a good idea.
There maybe some others out there. I am not sure.

Don: I'm really glad you jumped in here because I was going to mention your coming kits but I didn't have all the details that you mentioned.
Ralph: Other that the two coming kits that RRR is introducing, I don't know of any other wood 12 cell/LSH kits available YET. I predict that there will be more on the market before the end of the year. The class is still quite young and hull development is still going on. The class has just been accepted to be run this season in your neck of the woods
I am developing a new LSH design myself but it is still on the building board/jig and I anticipate that there will be two competing this season (one in Toronto and one in California). There will eventually be plans and maybe kits but not likely before the Fall or Winter.

If the hull is 24" or longer, yes it would be legal for LSH.
Here is a link to the proposed rules:

Thanks for the replies.
The RRR kits sound very interesting. How will the kits be made available? I don't see anything on the homepage about RRR products. Will there be a section on the RRR board with details such as prices, delivery and more info on the kits?
As I recall, the first run is already sold out so I guess even the word of mouth is enough to move this product.
It would be great to get more info on these kits.
Thanks RvE

The Rum Runner kits, etc. will be marketed from a new website -
www.rumrunnerhobbies.com
The home page exists there but the rest of it is still under construction. I would guess that one would be advised to watch there and here for an upcoming announcement.

Is Rum Runner still planning on producing any wood hydros, soon?

Rve,
The OBoy Oberto is a scratch built wood hydro that you can order plans from RCMB. It is very light, qualifies for LSH and is still run competively. However, it is not a kit, so it may not be for you. You can read an article by Larry Larson about the boat on the Rum Runner site which will tell you a lot about building and setting it up.

Yes! Final R & D / Cad work being completed on several boats. The Slo Mo will be first. The Tide and 30's Baby BootLeggar will be next.
Thanks

Sure - I will get Donnie to convert some graphx out of Auto cad.
BTW - all 3 of these new boats are intended to handle 700's. The hydros will also handle BL power. The BB could use a Basic 2400 and perform well. A geared 05 would work in the boat - also.
Thx.
