I saw somewhere that someone was using a Dewalt cordless drill motor and it was supposed to be the same thing that cost much more. Anyone here of this?? Thanks. Jason

Jason, a smart person once said the only dumb questions, are the ones that haven't been asked, ( just don't ask the same ones a million times LOL) anyway I believe that, Jeff wohlt here on the site has done plenty of fishing around with the dewalt motors, and I believe ken joye too, put dewalt in the search bar and you'll get a lot of hits, here's a good one though, hope it helps bro, and welcome to the board http://www.rumrunnerracing.com/feforums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=5476&highlight=dewalt

Jason, most of us won't come right out and tell you exact part numbers and details but if you do enough searching and testing you may get lucky with power tool motors. Theres alot of competition between power tool manufacturers so the motors are getting more powerful and durable every time someone comes out with a new model. This is good for our hobby!:p

I did lots of searching and calling on this. I called Dewalt and a few others including Johnson.
the dewalt line is pretty much gone as far as 9.6 v motors. Most have moved on up to 14.4 and 18v ---the 800 motor.
Here is what I found to be the hottest Dewalt motor that is still available....Speed 700. The problem is it does not have a front bearing...just bushing but so far no problems.
I ran this motor all weekend in a SC 21 and 12 X1700 cells. For having low numbers for effici...I can say it runs very well and has punch and good run time...as close as the NEO from what I can tell so far.
I think it is either a 6 or 8 Turn motor. It also has a 3 plate comm where all others have a 5 plate comm.
Most of these motors come out for tool purposes...our hobby seems to get them much later after the tool industry says it is a replacement part only...probably because the tool companies jumped so fast from 9.6 drills to 12 then 14.4 then 18 volt.
YOu can go to the Dewalt web site and find the motors but you have to know the drill model...the reason I had to call them.
They still run around $35-45. The 800 motor seems to be as cheap and some even cheaper.
Not sure if this helped but it is what I know.

That is a great price for a 700 motor. Should run well.

Any more thoughts on the Mini EV Motor ?
Looks like an 800 to me but i'm not sure if those specs are good for boats or just robots.

5mm shaft would probably tell you it is a 700 motor.

Hi Guys Jeff the motor is too big to be a 700. It must be closer to a 800. I will know soon as I ordered two today just to play with. Ned
I've been working with some highschool students on a robotics team, and we've been using Bosch Drill motors, and I'll have to say, you can abuse the daylights out of them and they keep going. I haven't evaluated them for boats yet, but it's on my list :-). There was an inexpensive source for the old motors, but I haven't heard of a source fo r the current model (This years comp is over so, hmmmmm) There is probably a ref to some cheap ones if you search through a place called www.chiefdelphi.com (I think).
For more info on First Robotics, go to www.usfirst.org.
Thanks
Later.

Hi everybody
I now have two of the Mini EV motors. They are indeed of the 800 size. They weigh in at 16oz ,the 700's are about 13oz. They have a very slightly oversize 5mm shaft. Some couplers may not fit . Stoneing the the shaft would correct that easily. they have a five pole arm. Revs up real well on 12 volts.Howells in fact. They could be a monster with 12 cells in a large boat. They have four mounting holes with probably 5mm threads. Now all I have to do is find a boat big eneough to try it on. n.h.schmidt

They have 4 grooves cut long ways in the shaft ( splines ? )
I sanded it a little and the flex hex fit right on .
I'm anxious to hear what the testing reveals .
It may be some time before i get around to putting mine to use .
