What is it? What technology should I be looking for in a ROAR stocker? I think I barbequed a P2K2 Pro today. I haven't ripped it apart yet but it wouldn't even turn over on it's own. I was wondering what the next generation stocker was.

Let me guess, too big of prop? :(

I think I screwed it up before I got to the pond. It didn't run 50 feet before it was acting strange. It's the same motor I ran in the micro Bullet last summer on a whopping 438. It wouldn't turn a 536 yesterday. I had cleaned up the comm, replaced the brushes, and went to a heavier set of springs. Oh and added a little Tribo. Who knows. Maybe I put it back together wrong. Now the comm looks like a bad soldering incident.
John gave me an Integy to test with but I just wondered what tech. was available. Like to get hold of the motor Chris ran. LOL

well lets see you need a boat motor right? theres 4 motors that trinity makes (well i dont know if they still make the green machine3)
frist is the p2k lowest rpm and highest tourqe.
then the p2k2 more rpm then p2k about the same or little less thourqe depending on the motor you get
then the green macine 3, much higher rpm then the p2k2 and alot less tourqe (GM3 for short)
and finnaly the best motor of all, the monster stock. amazing rpm and great power band tourqe between the gm3 and p2k2. (MS for short)
i have all of these motors and for boats i'd go with the p2k2 or MS depending on what props you have. i dont know the power band of the p2k2 but the MS has its tourqe at about 80% throttle so i guess thats good for keeping a boat on plane but i'm not sure.
my opinion on the GM3 is it was a waste of designing time. the p2k2 and MS are todays motors. just make sure you cool them like all good boaters (brushes and can)
if you want a MS lmk, i'll tell you how to get a good one
good luck
~Sean~
PS i've been racing off road for a year and i can win B main (A is the top 10, B is top 20, C is top 30 etc) i know my motor shiznit :P

The P2K2 or the monster is a good choice but i would suggest a TOP based (Orion) Core stock motor. They tend to be on the more "torquey" side and seem to run a tad cooler than the epic based stockers. The monster has a lot of top end but lacks "punch" that the Core makes at the bottom end of things. I guess all around i would say the Core is a great "in between" type of motor based on its great torque and relative higher RPMs than the p2k2. But i guess its just a matter of preferance. Go with whatever you like and good luck in your choice.

SeanS, you mentioned a MS lmk,for a good one . I sure could use your knowledge on this for a Micro-bullet with a 632 prop. Thank You.

Harry, when i mentioned the Core stock in my post i forgot to mention that i am the horses mouth in this case. I work directly with Orion as a motor builder and tuner for them and have tuned epic motors as well including the monster stock. My motors have many, many championships including State and regional crowns. I just wanted you to know all of this so you wouldn't think that i'm just some kid who has no idea what he's talking about. Its just not the case, i have almost 20 years of experience in the rc motor world. Ok, enough about me, on to my point. I am afraid you will possibly burn up a monster trying to get it to pull a boat around. They were designed for high RPMs at the sacrifice of torque. I've seen enough of them burn up in touring cars to know that they don't like pulling alot of gear or weight. I would hate to see you buy one and it only last a few passes. If you are going to get an epic motor go with the p2k2. Out of the box it doesn't lack the monster by far in RPMs but makes so much more usable torque. Since RPM x torque= HP, the p2k2 will prove to be the superior motor when tuned and geared properly. Again, don't want to step on your toes or anyone elses, just trying to save you some headaches if i can. Take care.

Brad-
What setup (brushes and springs) would you recommend for a Core stock? I have 2 with TRI 4499's, red springs, trued comms and zapped cans, both show considerably less torque on the dyno than a P2K2 with this setup, more like a Reedy MVP. Due to this similarity, I haven't attempted to use them in a boat.
Suggestions?

Patrick,
I suggest either trying some Reedy 766 or 767 brushes or Integy M3002 X-cut brushes. The 767's will give you the most overall power (wattage)and RPM's but you will lose some usable bottom end. The M3002's make incredible bottom end but lack much top.
Either choice would be what i would go with. I would first start off with the 767's and go from there. I've played with the 4499's and 767's enough to know that the Reedy shines almost every time on the dyno. You said that you are getting results like a MVP. If this is the case, you have a motor capable of putting out a lot of power. Gearing and setup is criticle with motors like the MVP. If done properly you will have a motor that will run circles around the p2k series. The p2k2 is pretty much a bottom and mid-range motor, that is why i say the core is a good choice for inbetween it and a monster. The core has decent bottom, mid and top end which should make it a great choice for stock class boats wether it be for racing or just beating around with buddies. Try a pair of purple springs and take a little tension off of them (about 3 degrees or so on both sides). Make sure to true the comm up so its round. Also make sure the brush hoods are aligned properly. Break the motor in at around 3 volts for about 5 minutes or until the brushes are FULLY seated. Apply a drop of Tribo or any other like style of drops to the comm, install the motor and go rip the lake, etc. up. If you need any more help with getting the Core up to speed feel free to email me at kartrun@aol.com
Hope i helped!

Unfortunately, gearing is not an option in most stock class competition boats (parasitic drag) and it is very difficult, sometimes impossible, to tune the prop and hull to match the motors sweet spot. This is more pronounced in submerged drive setups, so I lean toward using the higher torque motors. If there was an easy way to tune the setup, it would sure make life easy on us stock racers. Haven't tried the M3002's, will have to check them out.
JUST A SILLY THOUGHT,DID YOU BREAK IN THE BRUSHES BEFORE RUNNING IT?

Jim,
Thanks for the props but you sure you got the right guy? It might very well be true what you said but i'm based out of Durham, NC. Just trying to refresh my memory. Brad

Brad, Orion supplied all the stock 05s the year I won the Ohio Dirt Oval Champs. The fastest stocker i ever had. They tore it down after the race. You might have been there maybe not. But your motors were. An Orion motor won the Mod Div. I also ran at Indy. Velodrome, Orlando, Cleveland and a bunch of places I forgot by now. I ran 10th/12thscale carpet/dirt/ road/oval never off road. When I ran Mod. it was always with a Orion. I'm way to old to keep up with the young kids now.
