I am looking for a few motor pics, mainly carb of an allison powered hydros, also I assume they run the oil filters outside the motor (forgive my ignorance ) as well as the fuel filter, do they use two filters each?? and is it like a dry sump system??
I have been working on my scale allison (homemade) for my Finlay shovel on and off, and want to put as much detail as I can, I have searched the internet and the usual suspects lesliefields, vitage hydros, air museum sites etc they are good but missing some vital ideas on linkages etc, I see the allison has a hydraulic cylinder on the side (right) attached to the carb linkage is the throttle hydraulic? any help would be appreciated....cheers eddie

Eddie i have been looking around the net for a while. Carb shots are tough to come by. There are a couple of nice allison shots of the Tempo VII on the unlimiteds Detroit website. Look under there photo search for tempo VII. Good detail photos from the rear couldn't really see the carb. Also try the Hydroplane and Raceboat Museum website. They have some really good photos of a Merlin Carb in situ. It is under the 82 atlas restoration photos. Thinking of using it as the proxy for the carb on my Miss Seattle Allison. later

I have some digital and print photos of Allisons some where and will try to post them. No matter what, I'll shoot some more shots of some allisons and merlins at the Harm Museum and post them on the E-RCU site or my site as a good reference for all. Roger Newton has building plans for both engine styles.

Jim thank you, I will put together some of the things I have found also, and maybe scan it and send to you.... I have both sets of Rogers plans, they are very good for sizes etc, basically I need to see all the connections ie fuel lines, oil lines linkages, I know it sounds crazy but as I have already covered the body with mahagony, and I am going to build a stock rudder for hardware I don't expect this one to be a racer, (it's 1/16th scale) but I am installing an astro 4 turn 05, so the speed should be at least in the mid 20"s I hope LOL, I'll post a pic of progress so far...... thanx again sir.. cheers eddie

Eddie, that model is stunning. Mind blowing detail on that Allison!

Only suggestion possible is that wasn't the motor painted?

Tom, Yup I guess you would be 100% correct but since this is a fictional (if it were My Boat) racer I would have everything polished LOL:-), and since it was made from aluminum and balsa and stuff I decided to show it off, but if I decide to make a new one for a mold the would be painted..... I go to my club meeting tommorrow, and need to hash it with the guys I guess I could always paint more of it, really only the valve covers and stacks are "chrome" I will see about "dyeing" the aluminum for the carb, and intake scoop... glad ya like it tom..

Eddie, Eddie, Eddie,,,, what am I donna do?

I warned you about having to break your thumbs. Just don’t let me catch you in the Portland area, without your bodyguard.

The Tillamook Air Museum (90 min. away) has a BUNCH of restored WW-II planes, and lots of spares. I know there is a Rolls Merlin, and there must be an Allison laying around too. There are two inside a P38, but it’s hard to get pictures of them.

Next time we are in the area I will shoot a bunch of photos.

And best of all, it has a flying boat.

The world's largest!

Next time I'm out there, Garry, we're going to have to get together again.

Thanx Garry I am really trying on this one I have another midway for gofasty, and will try a mold for a dummy engine with a little less detail... the pics sound great maybe we can make a compilation and jim lily might post it on the e-rcu sight for everyone, or maybe we can ask to have it posted here too.. I think a lot of guys would really dig detail too.. when we run the south river cup at the end of the month the club boat is a crackerbox, you get a maximum of 50 pts for thebuilding and scaleness of the boat and details documentation etc, and the other 50 maximum for a win in the race, 40 for second place, 30 for third and a minimum of 20 pts for racing, we have 12 - 15 boats entered, the building of the boat took about 9 meetings, and we used a different facet of building for a topic, ie laying out plans, cutting sheeting, we used Paul pachmeyers water cooling as a topic, etc it got more of these older guys building again then there has been in the last 5 years... the club paid for the plans, and the winner of this years event picks the boat for next year..... oh and everybody had to run the same exact motor, must have sub-c cells any chemistry (except li-ion) and it should be fun...

looking forward to the pics fellas...

Andy when I was on this logistics base in Brindisi italy, it's claim to fame was that this old air base used to be used by mussolini for those big old italian and german flying boats there were some great photos,, the hangars for them are still there and they were HUGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I love flying boats as well... cheers eddie

Isn't it the Evergreen Aviation Museum in McMinnville that has the Spruce Goose?

Actually, the “Spruce Goose” Museum in McMinnville, with Howard’s monster, is different than the Tillamook Air Museum (but just as close). And, it is a natural one day event to visit both. The Tillamook museum is more of a working air park. Not so clean and neat, but you can get close and look up into the wheel wells, see all the bug strikes on the leading edges and kick over oil catch pans, if your not careful.

YES, reserve an extra day, we will see lots of planes, and drive a boat or two. You too Eddie.

You are correct, Kev.

I was thinking "Oregon" and "air museum" not "Tillamook vs Evergreen."

I think I better reserve 2 days extra! I almost have enough frequent flyer miles to pull it off but I was hoping to use them for Reno Air Races and the Devil Mountain September Heats (hint hint) next year.

I visited the Hughes HK-1 when it was stationed in Long Beach. It was everything I had ever read about it. The size is so impressive and immense when taken in context with other large aircraft of its day. I also went inside it. They had the flight deck completely open but it had a plexiglass barrier just aft of the flight engineers station. They had full size likenesses of Hughes and others at the controls. It was great! On the floor that had a P&W 28 cylinder engine to drool over. Wow, what a great aircraft!

Like I mentioned before why don't we each compile what we have... I am willing to scan evrything for a pdf file, if it helps... I really like the idea of posting for all because we all spend hours researching stuff and the whole point of forums is sharing knowledge,,, or in my case lack there of.... LOL.......
can't wait for some pics....

I was in a bit of a hurry, and all of the boats were on tilt at the shop. They've just moved so its a little cluttered. My batteries were running out on the camera. I'll add some even better ones as time allows!

Jim That would be great, especially with all the talk about 1/8th size boats, lol, do you want the article with patterns for building a driver? the article is here on this website
http://www.rumrunnerracing.com/articles/scalefig.pdf
this gent is in my club and has given me permission to send to whomever. I can send you an original pdf if you like.
thanx again for the snaps.

My goal is to make something similar to the final product those patterns create, and then make a rubber mold and cast figures in resin. My "plug" will be a combination of a variety of action figures and some sculpted bondo.

Eddieh I am blown away Love the motor! What parts are alunimium, Have you molded them Yet? I have a rubber vulcanizer that makes the best molds ever great detail but it must be out of metal. Keep up the good work!!

eddieh

Randy Thanx Man !!! from a modeler like yourself, very high praise indeed!!! :-)
the valve covers, the headers, the carb, the brackets, are all aluminum, I could have made it all out of aluminum, i threw away the blower, the tranny, the original intakes (very first) cause the motor was getting heavy, that was also aluminum, had I known you had a vulcanizer! (what is that by the way? I don't want pointy ears) JK ! we gotta talk when I make the bigger allison.... i'm thinking of making 2, 1 in 1:12th-1:14th and maybe 1 somewhere around 1/8th scale LOL, have learned a lot since this one... what would be cool is to design the 1/2 block in a basic mold and use epoxy in sort of a slip casting technique, then fill it with non expanding or very minimal expanding foam, the other parts in lightweight casting resin with micro balloons? I don't know but it'll be fun to try

I would love to help I cannot do everything and have tried to stay focused on hull design. It is for selfish reasons "sorta" I have always wanted to design hull with motors exposed but never had the time to build the plugs Let alone the parts. A vulcanizer is a rubber mold making machine I use it for my carbon filled parts. If you would like to conspire together I am interested.

Eddie, You'll never guess what I found in my archives. I had forgotten that I had these drawings. They are for an Allison. All of the parts are broken down and have at least 3 views. What scale would you like? right now they are 1/5 scale. These were drawn for a friend of mine that built a 1/5 scale 1956 Miss Thriftway. Let me know.
