The Devil Mountain Water Boilers are pleased to announce the dates for our big 2 day race, October 5&6 2002. Once again, we are thrilled that Ray Fuller from Fullers Fast Electric‘s has stepped up to the plate as our title sponsor, does Ray ever take a break??? But that’s not all, the Fullers Fast Electric‘s October Heats will also be the fifth and final race of the Lightingman N2 Mono Series, sponsored by FastElectrics.com! Thanks for including us again in your series, Andrew! We will be returning to Kaiser Cove in Fremont, California for the event, it’s a really great pond that is one of the oldest Nitro ponds in the country. It has ample pit area big enough for trailers & motor homes, a elevated driver stand and separate boat launch. Best of all, on a good day, Kaiser Cove can have some really fast record breaking water, just ask Greg Schweers! Again, members of the NAMBA Dist. 9 nitro racers will be helping out with CD & judging duties. We will also have a full time retrieve boat driver. Fremont is only about 45 minutes south/east of San Francisco, October is one of the best times of year to visit San Francisco, so why not make a vacation out of it?

We will also be having Micro classes, at the least, Micro Hydro. If we have enough interest, we will offer more classes. Three boats make a class! And since the father of MicroHydros.com, Trent Hare is a member of the Devil Mountain Water Boilers, you can well imagine there are a number of micros in the club already and more coming! This may very well be the largest and first organized gathering of micro enthusiast in North America!

But wait! There’s more! On Saturday, the Devil Mountain Water Boilers will be hosting a free BBQ!!! Master chief, Mike Stoumen will be in charge of the BBQ. Mike, along with his wife Anne, own one of the finest restaurants in the Bay Area. This will surely be a culinary event not to be missed!

Of course like this years event, we want to have fun along with some hard racing, how does a lights out, run whatcha brung night race sound? We will hang light sticks on the buoys and boats and pass the hat for a winner take all purse!

We will have a snack bar, raffle and provide power, tents & tables for racers coming from out of town. Usually, October has nice weather here in Northern California, temps are normally in the low 70’s or high 60’s and it’s one of our least windy months of the year.

We will be posting more details as they become available, so stay tuned to Rum Runners Racing message board for more!!!

So, mark your calendars now for the Fullers Fast Electric‘s October Heats October 5&6, 2002! I hope to see you there!

You bet, Jim! You could run it in Q/S Sport Hydro, at 36" you can run up to 24 cells! There is a 1 day NAMBA membership for $10. Here is a link to some pics from last years "August Heats" there are a few pics of the Q/S Hydros at the top. August Heats Photo page 1 (http://hometown.aol.com/imtransfer/AH_PHOTOpage1.html)

We also have open practice Friday eveing, if you make it down, I might have an extra Limited Sport Hydro you could run.

Go fast, turn lef... errr... right! :)

So what kind of motors would be in the Q/S Sport Hydro?
And what kind of speeds are they running.
Do they all run 24 cells? I don't have room for 24 cells in my boat.
Just trying to figure out if my astro 25/5 would be even be close to competitive. Or if I would need to get something different for a motor.

Hi Jim,

I never ran the AstroFlights, so I can't help you there, maybe some of the other guys like Andy, Jeff or Randy can jump in and help. I can tell you Andy Kunz won at least 1 heat last year and finished 2nd overall running a 36" hull on 18 cells and a Plett 30 series motor! We emphasize the FUN in racing, not that we don't take the racing serious, we just also like to have a good time as well!

Hi Jim Andy Kunz had a 290/30/5T Plettenburg that ran on 18 cells .Rick ran a B50 XL8t Hacker BL that ran on 18cells that was way too hot, it thurmaled quite a bit. I ran a 3t 1800 Plett on 18 cells, that was fast but hard to get on plane . I switched to a B50 XL9t Hacker that can not run more than a x 440 on 19 cells . my Eagle runs about 45 to 55 MPH. when I can afford it I am going to get a B50 XL11T to run a safer set up. I have see others in the s class run 19 but not more. I may run 14 cells with the 9t hacker can do that with no problem my hull is not heavy with a little slower speeds around 45 mph.
Hope this helps you Jim.
We all would love to have you come down and run with us, of course you will have to turn right.

thanks Randy Than helps a lot. I would have to see if I can do something about the motor as my boats top speed on 12 cells is about 33mph and I can only run 14 cells which makes a big difference but not close to 50 mph. Not sure if I can swing it to make the trip and have to buy a motor I can't use when i run in classic thunder. Well see what happens.
thanks

Jim,

If you can make it, I'll help you pit with this class (sorry Randy).

I ran a 6T Plett on 18 2400's in a mostly-scale (reversed offset, different cowlling) Miss 7-11 that was scaled down from Roger's plans. RTR weight was 6.5 pounds.

Barry Janzen has the boat now. I'm trying to get him to come out to the race, but no luck yet. The box for this boat is big enough to put all the tools in as well as a few other boats, so he HAS to bring it. I even had some clothes packed in it when I went to CA last year.

Randy,

Excellent memory! The boat could have handled a 5T but I don't know that I could!

I sold the motor and batteries to Matt after Barry got the boat.

Hi:
We have been able to reserve a block of rooms for the October Heats, at the hotel which got the best ratings after our race last year. It is the:

Best Western Garden Court Inn
5400 Mowry Ave.
Fremont CA 94538
(800) 541-4909 (Reservations)
(510) 792-4300 (Direct)
http://www.hotelswest.com/fre/

It is located just East of Interstate 880 on Mowry, and is very close to the race site. The rooms have either two queen or one king size bed in them (your choice), and we have requested a block of ground floor rooms. The group rate is $69.00 plus tax per night, and is listed under "October Heats". We will also have a meeting room available, and we will have maps and refreshments there on Friday night for those coming of you who are coming in from out of town. We will post hours and other details for it later. Also, you will be able to ship boxes there a few days ahead of the race, for them to hold. Anything that we get in will be in the meeting room on Friday evening. Full information on the hotel may be found at the link above, or you may contact me directly. My daytime telephone is (408) 991-7472. Please also email me at mstoumen@pacbell.net if you make a reservation there, so that we can track who is coming in and make any last minute local arrangements that may come up, for you. Please forward this note to anyone that I have forgotten to send it to. This will also be posted in a few spots on Rum Runner.
Mike
