View Full Version : New Wood!
Hello Guys,
Well hear it is, my first Micro attempt. It's still rough and in primer but it's close. Sorry about the pics being a bit bright but the white primer really reflects the flash. The boat is 18" long with a 7.5" beam over sponsons. Paul.

Paul,
Looks real good. How much does it weigh now? How much will it weigh with batts?

Paul,
That looks a lot like the hull Kevin Whitehead ran in Michigan last year. Are you going to paint it scale?

Paul,
Is this one from a set of plans?
To me it appears to be very similar to the Atlas Van Lines/Smirnoff/Myr Sheet Metal hulls from the early 70's.
A narrower beam, less of a pickle fork, and an older style non-trip area (near the transom) than what I had on the Miss Vernor's I ran last year.
At 18", is this built as a micro racing hull?

Paul, looks like you are liking the straight shafts. What is you r opinion on these? I know you once said your other boat runs exceptionally well with it.
Have you decided to run more straight shafts in the future?
Nice job...what the heck do you have...a saw mill over there! :)
You know you are addicted when you fall asleep with a dremel in your hand!
Hello Guys,
J, it weighs 104.9 grams, with batteries I have no clue because I don't own any that would work.
Andy, I've got a special paint job planned for this one, not scale.
Kevin, No it's not from plans, I actually modified a Atlas boat to make some patterns, I plan on redrawing them to better suit my needs.
Jeff, I'll be running mostly straight shaft boats now. Anything I build new will be straight shaft, I like it better than a flex drive and it works great. As a matter of fact I have a big 24 cell hydro planned for the MI race and it will be a straight shaft boat too. I really like the exposed shafts as well, they just look cool.

Paul...are you using mostly 1/8" shafts or are you going on up to 3/16" with the larger boats and cell counts?

but who cares about having to much time
when do i get mine???
Hello Guys,
Jeff, I should clarify that only on my scale hydros will I run straight shafts. I think no matter what you power the boat with a 1/8" shaft is sufficient but I think I will be running a 3/16" shaft on the big hydro just for convenience and scale looks. I should also mention I'm running all titanium shafts on ceramic bearings this year as opposed to piano wire and brass/sintered bushings, I would never run a 3/16th steel shaft.
Matt, I was going to build you one until I saw that dig you gave me, lmao. ;-)
Paul.

1/8" will still be plenty for the big boat. Talk to Barry Janzen about position - he has my big boat. I ended up with the flex cable in the same place/angle as if it had been built with a straight shaft (as I should have figured, since all my scales end up that way).
Can't wait to see it!
Andy
Hello Andy,
You built that big boat with a flex drive?
Paul.

Yes - I also sold it with a flex drive. If I were building it again I would build it just like an overgrown UL - motor on CG to reduce gyro action, straight shaft off the motor with ball bearings in a glass stuffing box, probably ending in a Fine strut.
35", a Cordite/Plett 290/30/6T, and 18 cells.

...
90cm and 24cells ...
We're far from the 45cm long Hydro hull who initiated the post !
