What size of motor & number of cells would one be looking at to move something like this.. How could one build something light enough and strong enough? Tips.??

I have a couple of Plett 50's, so that's what I'm going to use with 32 cells and one of Andy's new Emperor ESC's.
I think Eddie is going to use a "Big ol can of whoop A$$" ;)

Dan, after really doing research.. I think I am going mit eine grossen can of deutch voopa$$ plett 355/40/3 on 24.... I think the thing to do would be to have a motor mounting plate that will bolt into a frame mount, because until all the building dust settles, we really won't know how these bad boyz are gonna run, My heart is with Kens Idea but my head says use a little bigger Plett.....
it is pretty fluid right now...

Hi Eddieh,
plett 355/40/3
i wish you good luck, a 3 turn is killer. Almost no efficiency and the brushsparks will set your hull on fire :D
Best regards,
matt

LOL! The sparks will set the wood hull on fire!:D Ya got me. I am going to use one of dans 355 ( I do not know the turns) until I have the bucks to get a coke can lehener or what is the hot one at the time. Andy put me down for one of the Emperor SC's.

Matt I would think it was just the opposite, less wire more efficient.. now I am a bit confused.... what about the 4 turn???
cheers eddie

Just for you, Randy, 3 turns!!! :D
No prob! Just install a US Dept of Forestry spark arrestor around the motor! :D

Hi Eddieh,
4 turn is the lowest you can order from plettenberg. They do make 3 turn armatures on special request.
BTW: has anyone of you ordered a Plett directly from Germany?
Regards matt

Matt, The best price I have seen so far direct from germany is here http://216.239.39.104/translate_c?hl=en&u=http://www.hoellein.com/websites_neu/kaonline/emotoren/empletti_ex.htm&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dplettenberg%2B355/40/3%26hl%3Den%26lr%3D%26ie%3DUTF-8%26oe%3DUTF-8%26sa%3DG
but not sure if they sell armatures etc...

Hi Eddieh,
yes, Höllein has very good prices.
Looks like they ship to us and if they sell the motors they should be able to get armartuers as well. Be sure to order the watercooling and the tuning brushes ;)
Funny, that they have listed the .3 armatures...
I spoke to Plett because i thought of converting mine to a 3 turn and they told me that this configuration would have huge rpm but , as mentioned before, very low efficiency and the comm will look like "a ring of fire" after few runs!
Best regards,
matt

Both of my Plett 355's are 3 turn. I wouldn't call the comm's a "a ring of fire" but they are more discolored then normal. I will most likely go with a 4 turn. Does anyone know were I can buy a water cooling jacket for the 355?

Dan, did you check with donnie at rumrunner hobbies, they had some metal cooling jackets... they weren't specifically for the plett, but check the sizes... just a thought...
are you thinking of runnng the 4 turn only to go up in cells? or do you think the run time would be too low, this is really new ground for me.... thanks eddie

It's new ground for me too! My gut tells me that the 3 turn is just to hot for direct drive, I would rather be conservative and not melt down the 355! Maybe even go with 5 turn.
Did you get my email?

Dan honestly I keep think about this vid
http://www.rumrunnerracing.com/feforums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=9340
now this is a 21 pound boat ok he is using twin 355/40/4's but there is also more surface friction no? anyway check it out... also it seems to disagree with andrews comments about a nasty 4 bladed cleaver.....
but don't know what the total run time would be this is on 32 cells so I think the 3 turn on 24 would be killer

Hi Eddieh,
but there is also more surface friction no?
the drifter hulls are known to get out of the water very quick (almost no V angle on the pads), and from my point of view you can`t compare it to a hydroplane hull. Even the 21 pound drifter hull would jump out of the water and land on its back if you give full throttle.
For the motors i can say that i like them more than the 45/4. They have more rpm and seem to suit easy-planeing hulls perfectly. Look at the oberto vid, this boat has also a 40/4 with 32 cells and it was continuously faster than my bud.
Best regards,
matt

Eddie
re multiblade props
for a prop of the same diameter and balde shape more blades have more mechanical resistance but more importantly more thrust
Therefore they present a heavier load to the motor and result in higher current draw.
The problem with assessing the use of multiblade props on that hull is there is no control data as to performance with three or two blade props
