View Full Version : R/C "Combat"?

I know they have R/C Naval Warship style combat, but does anyone know if a combat style similar to model airplane control-line combat has been tried?
In airplane control-line combat, each plane has a streamer of ~20 feet trailing off the back of the plane. Two competitors fly about and try to cut the streamer off the back of the other plane. The plane with the longest streamer at the end of the fight wins (assuming they're both not trashed by smashing into each other at the time :) )
I assume something similar could be done with model boats, say, using fast ABS-hulled boats like the Danvo models. Actually "cutting" the streamer could be tough, as it would rely a lot on the position of the prop underwater, but maybe another method could be used where a blade of some sort could be mounted under the hull to cut the streamer when it passes over it.
Seems like it could be a fun event with self-righting boats.

We do this with boats equipped with a pin at the front, and a balloon at the back. Last boat with a balloon wins. :D
We recently did it at a mall show in their indoor pond.
The public just loved it.

Great! I thought there might have been something like this done. You could even make it have a series of balloons trailing behind instead of just one to make it more similar to the airplane combat, which works very well and the spectators love it.
It would be nice to see this as an actual event rather than just an exhibition at a mall. There's something to be said about pure all out racing speed, to be sure, but raw combat piloting skill has it's allure, too!
Good idea with the balloons. I wonder if a minor crash would bend the needle or break it off? Or just have it so short that it's really tough to bend or break.
Could help the sales of the mini/micro Star from Danvo, too :)

Great to hear that it was fun! Unfortunately, nobody around here has model boats so I doubt I'll be able to try this anytime soon. But if I can find a club, maybe it'll be something to introduce as a local event.
If it gets widespread, maybe they'll have it as an exhibition event at the nats :)

If you were more specific about where "here" is besides "USA" we might be able to help. Would you mind if I had one of my customers e-mail or phone you if there was one nearby?

I live in Western New York State. If there was a club anywhere within maybe 50 miles I'd be glad to go run with them. Anywhere east of Rochester or south of Hamburg might be a little far.
I have no problems with people sending me email. Should be listed with my personal info.

trying to sink the other guy's boats in rc combat is half the fun while trying to avoid his bb's is the other half:moon:

Don did it for you, you don't see other threads as this site is mainly a fast electric site, meaning racing or sport boating but on the speed side, not so much scale running, that doesn't mean there aren't folks interested just your the first to mention it, it would go into other boating quaetions where it is now...

One of the events I ran at the Mid-Winter Electrics was "Doctor Jet's Dreaded Limbo Combat."
Imagine 20 airplanes going back and forth under a "Limbo" bar equipped with VERY LARGE treble fishing hooks, and concrete blocks on the ground to discourage "touch-and-go" passes. At one event, we even passed tennis balls out to the spectators to add some "audience participation" in the event. The rules went like this: Any airplane, any power system. Five minute time limit. Pilots must fly a figure 8 pattern passing under the bar in each direction. One point for going under the bar. Two if you did it inverted. If you "took out" another airplane, you got his points. Winner gets all the prizes, second place gets squat.
Lessons learned: Wood and composite aircraft have short lifespans. Intentionally causing a mid-air collision is harder than it seems. The treble hooks worked well. Hitting an airplane with a tennis ball is difficult, but not impossible. And lastly, combat is one of the most entertaining things you can do with your clothes on!
