i want to build an electric powered offshore monster about 40 inches long, i preferably want a cat , is there one available, i need it for the pond where the gas boats race there sometimes can be big waves and scale to my triton they would be 3 - 4 meter swells.

What sort of engine(S) / controller /number of cells do i need to do about 90 kph with a boat this size ?

How big do those drifter "s" come ?

Cheers

Cats are really not rough water hulls especially stepped hulls like the drifter S. You should get something like the AC Boats Lazer 40 http://www3.telus.net/acboats/ which was specifically made to handle real rough race conditions and finish right side up. That boat will require a large brushless motor good for 24-32 cells. If I were to power that boat I would use a motor that turns about 500-800 RPM and you can use a hacker 77 controller or a schulze 32.80. Boat this size isn't cheap, but it's lots of fun.

why such a low RPM Steve.. I would pick someing closer to 20,000 .. or whats that RPM per volt you where refering too?
But ya.. the Laser 40 is a good hull.. Or the Laser 45.. thats a pretty awesome hull also.. Seen them both run..

Hi Tony, cheers for that , but Im not into Vee's and plus the boats that are running in the same conditons are stepped hull cats and they handle it sweet as, cause they big, like 46 inches long.

plus generally speaking a vee wont be as quick on the same motor any cats that are about that size, do scat cat make a big one like that

As my nick suggests, id just rather have a cat, i just love the whole tunnel concept. like my boat runs a lot higher out of the water into the wind, thus less drag = more speed. it really gets some good lift, sometimes too much like in the Video of it flipping in the picture gallery.. this was a super windy day though

Does that tunnel create a vaccum ? like ground effects, i suppose you'd call it water effects.

its sort of what im looking for but i want something a little more scale. as i mentioned i want to build a tommy bahama model but want about 40" long

What you see in the tunnel are called "Anti-Stumble Blocks" they help the hull perform in rough and calm water contitions.. and aid the hull in cornering.. This hull has almost no lift and is not recommended for electric.. I have a very long conversation with Andy.. and have see the development of this hull.. I've learned a lot of technical information on hull design from him.. It's handy when he is local.. If you want to run a gas engine.. this hull will out perform any other manufacture on the market.. that hull runs perfect in any type of water conditions. The high deck on the one in the picture was designed to fit the quickdraw engines. Other versions of the cat they found quite a bit of the hatch had to be cut away.. and the engine stuck out.. so this corrected the problem.. the little air intakes on the lower mid part of the deck are actually bulges inside to allow for the exhaust pipe to go from the side of the engine.. It is all very clever.. very well designed..

There is a thread some where on this site wih a guy running dual 355 Pletts
at 100kph.

But how much does it cost to setup a boat like that ? does it run twin ESC's or a big sucker?

how much are we talking for the whole setup of a monster like this. how long does do the batteries last ? can anyone tell me, as im on the verge of ordering a 44 inch aeromarine avenger pro, the new 26cc zenoah, and a full hardware kit, tuned pipe etc...

My local club only races gas and nitro, and im thinking its gonna be a lot easier and cheaper to start racing gas powered, like very soon. and then i could bring electrics into the club and build a monster electric Cat ...

catman have you seen the PIP bitburger?.my bro has one & runs it on a hacker B50 14 XL direct on 24 cells & it definately quenches his thirst for speed...cheers!

To get the boat to even come close to running with a gas boat with a stock G260 you are going to need about $2000 to get the boat to your door. If the gas guys run 5-6 laps you can be in the hunt with the "right" electric setup, if you are wanting to go out and play you are looking at about 6-8 minutes of runtime at about 35-40 MPH, if you set it up for racing I bet you can get 50 MPH and finish 6 laps with some power to spare!

I love the pitburger, but 2000 american is like 3,123.62 in New Zealand dollars, when for
Aeromarine Avenger pro $390
Hardware kit $290
G231PUM $415 23 cc
-----------------------------------------
$1095 nzd

G260PUM $446 26 cc
-----------------------------------------
$1126 nzd

plus ill need tuned pipe and header i can get this setup

ill most likely go for the 26 cc model as it has 4.2 hp standard and a cyclone at the pond does about 100 kph with a 23 cc engine thats around 4hp i think.

Ill then build something like a twin lehner powered bittburger over time, it wont be so costly over time.

Im definately not giving up on electrics, gas boats will give me a good feel for setting up a fast cat.
