An 1/8th Scale Journey
Recently I traded my twin apparition that had been sitting on the shelf for a long time for an an 1/8th scale hull. This hull was originally layed up in 2008 by Randy Naylor and is an all carbon fiber boat. As such, it is very light with a ready to run weight of about 12.5 lbs. Unfortunately, the the inner wooden structures had torn loose as had the stuffing tube, the floor was very thin and there was 3 degrees of anhedral in the starboard sponson. I have a goal of completing this project in time for the SOWEGA race in November. And so the journey began...... Last edited by PropNut; 07-11-2015 at 03:26 AM. |

After doing some measurements, I was dismayed. The boat in it's current livery as the Lincoln Thrift was incorrect. With a pickle fork depth of only 5.5 inches, it was more than a little off for the Lincoln Thrift. The correct pickle fork depth for that hull is closer to 9 inches. So the search began for a cabover boat with the correct dimensions. While doin a lot of research, I repaired the inner sturcture, reinforced the tunnel floor, replaced the stuffing tube and eliminated the anhedral in the Starboard sponson.

The search for a cabover hull with the correct dimensions was a long journey. The chart attached shows all of the hulls with a pickle fork depth of 5.5 inches. The 7474 hull that makes the Charlies Girl, Mark n' PaK or Century 21 boat seemed logical, but those boats had no rear winglets and I didn't want to grind them off. The boat would also make the 7612 hull like the U-30 Bud Light, Thousand Trails or Miss Prodelco, but I realy didn't want a winged cabover. (And yes, that is Andy Greene holding his Mark n Pak.)

The only boats remaining required a cowl change, so that's the direction I took. The new cowl from RC Boat company arrived last week and the fitment process has begun as well as the long and arduous process of sanding and painting. I did manage to generate some graphics as well. I wimped out and decided on the easiest paint scheme, the 1982 Gilmore Special. I also recieved the excellent scale exhaust stacks and intake from Larry Kraemer.
and so the journey continues.................... |

Ray, take a look at the U-64 Squire Shop 1978.
That hull is a 28 1/2 foot hull. |

Ray, never mind about the Squire Shop. Didn't see the post as to having the Cowl from Steve. His cowl is much better looking than that was on the boat.

A little more progress. Reinforced the bottom cowl section for the exhaust cutouts, made the cuts and while I was there installed the rear hatch magnets and corresponding fender washers under the hull deck. Lots of research done as to the proper placement of the cutouts.

A point to be made before you get too picky about dimensions other than length, beam, tunnel width and after plane length, all other dimensions are for guidance. In practice they are quite variable even on the actual boat and have been known to change during a season. Hull depth is not really defined and varies upon whom you talk to. For boats from the 50's and 60's it is pretty straight forward. It is the distance from the deck shear at the sponson transom to the bottom of the boat or the flat bottom extended. Things start to get real muddy from the Karelsen hulls on.

Other than "length, beam, tunnel width and after plane length" there is not much left to be picky about. Last edited by PropNut; 07-21-2015 at 03:05 PM. |
